[Win7SP1] Update failure

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
My C drive was full, I had to move files to my D drive to run the SURT. I moved some of the files generated by the fix you have worked on since 9-29-16. What files can I delete, and where will I find them? Aren't some in folders that I'll need to access as an administrator? How do I do that?
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
I am sorry I made this mistake: I did not see your post #40 before attaching the checkSUR.log file (post #41) until about 1 hour ago. I changed the Win Update setting to never, downloaded KB3177467, and opened it. The Windows Update Standalone Installer window opened and shows it is searching for updates. Clicking on the cancel button in the window did nothing. I checked the Win Update settings and "Never check for Updates" is still shown, but the Windows Update Standalone Installer is still searching for updates after about 1/2 hour. I opened "View Update History" and I found that KB3177467 and KB947821 were successfully installed yesterday Wednesday, so I terminated the Standalone Installer through TaskManager. I then opened the KB3172605 update and Windows Update Standalone Installer is still searching for updates. I'll leave it running, and if KB3172605 installs, I'll do the same for the last update, and then run SURT again, while awaiting your instructions.

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hi

Those updates were to speed up Windows Update searches after installing them. However, since you were able to run SURT after clearing space. If possible, aim to clear at least 10-15% of the drive's total space free for Windows to run properly.

Since the updates are still taking a long time, restart your computer, and install the remaining updates from the list above. It should make the scans faster in the future. If any of the updates fail, let me know.

As for the SURT errors left, I need to source some files when I get home, so that will be delayed for the evening.

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
Both KB 3172605 and KB3185330 failed to install, and the message returned for both was " was not installed" without any other message or error number. KB 3177467 was successfully installed before the checkSUR.log was generated and attached to post #41. Also, I need to free up disk space on my C drive. I have moved folders to my D drive and deleted files as much as I feel somewhat confident that I won't screw operations up. Others I need some form of permission and therefore did not move or delete. The C drive is loaded with files generated by this fix operation that I feel I should not delete or move. I have 119 GB used and 230MB open on C drive and 318GB open on D drive. I am asking for advice on how to free up additional C drive space because trying to install the three updates you asked me to do has returned "not enough disk space", until I moved and deleted folders and files as I described above.
Thanks for your continued help.
Jeff

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

You can use various tools like Disk Cleanup, and CCleaner. However, I found deleting installers in Downloads folder to save a lot of space. As for update errors, I believe the updates should be installed when SURT issues are fixed. Unfortunately, you would have to wait for the evening. I can source the files from the main computer.

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
I can add that when I tried to install KB3172605, the "searching for updates..." message was displayed for hours overnight. I couldn't stop it this morning until I did the ctrl-alt-delete, and found that this forum website was frozen. I had to shut the power off and restarted the computer. The next attempt at installing KB3172605 went through the initialization and install procedure quickly ending in the "not installed" message. Same procedure and result when I tried to install KB3185330. However in between doing these attempts is when I needed to create more C drive space as I described in post #45. Right now I have about 0.2% open disk space and I dont know what more space I can free up.
Thanks for your update,
Jeff

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hi siltyclaycorvair

This is the first set of fixes

SFCFix Fix
This fix is very specific for siltyclaycorvair's computer. Trying this fix on your own computer might damage your computer. If you are after assistance, create a new thread, and you will be assisted shortly.

Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and move the executable on your Desktop.
Download the attached View attachment SFCFixScript.txt and move the archive to your Desktop
Note: Make sure that the file is named SFCFixScript.txt, do not rename it.
Save any work you have open, and close every programs
Drag the SFCFixScript.txt file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it
1p8eDnI.gif

SFCFix will launch, let it complete
Once done, a file will appear on your Desktop, called SFCFix.txt
Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply

There are two errors to fix, so we will run SURT later once those are fixed as well (I first need to make sure these fixes finish successfully)

Hello CKing,
Here is the text file. SURT download started about an hour ago, checked for updates, found a Windows Hotfix, and is initializing installation. I'll attach the checkSUR log in a post when finished.

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
Attached is the log file. Could you explain to me what caused the problem with these updates? Also, my CBS folder has many CBSPersist*.log files. Can I delete those and when? Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

The fix worked!

Could you explain to me what caused the problem with these updates?
From what I can tell, some of the files were corrupt, that is now finally fixed!

Also, my CBS folder has many CBSPersist*.log files. Can I delete those and when?
I usually would leave those alone. Log files are usually quite small. However, under certain circumstances, the some of the logs can be GBs in size. In that case, delete the oldest ones only.

Can you install the updates now?

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
I am checking for Updates now in Control Panel Windows Updates. By the way, the "win10 reserved" note is gone, maybe my screw-up in it's install in July did have something to do with these two Win7 update problems.

The log files are big GB size, from July, August, September and October. I'll delete all before September 29 (before your involvement time).

Of course, I'll reply post if the updates don't install, in the meantime, thanks much for your help.

It could be that. However, since I used Windows 8.1 during this time before I upgraded it to Windows 10, I can't tell from experience. However, around this time, there was the bug in Windows Update where it is stuck checking for updates. The temporary solution was to install a specific type of update each month (Which were some of the updates in the list which I suggested ). Now that Microsoft combined the updates into one cumulative updates, it may be fixed.

The reason for Windows 10 offer being gone was Microsoft started rolling out updates to remove the GWX, now that the offer is over.

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
Windows Update is still searching for updates, about 17 hours so far. Based on your suggested list of updates comment in your last post, recall that two of your three listed suggested updates would not install. Should I try installing those again, or will that be redundant because of the combined update that may or may not be installed yet on my computer?
Just to check with you if ok to do, I will schedule Win7 updates to be automatic rather than "never" after the manually-triggered search finds the current updates.
Thanks for info on Win10. I am less of a computer user now than I was 2 years ago when I stopped bringing my engineering work home to catch up on my deadlines. You may or may not have noticed I'm home most of the time - I'm retired now, and I don't believe Win10 is essential, if I can rely on Win7
Thanks, I'll post again about the update status or problems if any.

Well, in that case, we need to install those updates to make Windows Update scans faster. Before you do that though, change the setting back to Never Check for Updates, and restart. Then install those. The combined updates basically combine separate security updates and optional updates released on Patch Tuesdays into one mega-update. It does not include any previous updates.

That's okay! There were many who were annoyed by the constant nagging to upgrade, and the information sent to Microsoft in Windows 10, etc and did not upgrade. Also, while the update is free, there are some things that you need to do like update the drivers (most should automatically be updated by Windows Updates), and some programs may not be compatible, etc

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
Sorry for all this work I'm asking of you. Per your last post, I shut down, and restarted my computer while it was still searching for updates. I attempted to change the settings in Control Panel Windows Update to "never". It shows that option, clicked ok, and then it shows "automatically installs updates." Clicked on other options and OK, and now searching for updates again.
Is there another way to change the settings to "never" so that I can follow your last post suggestion?
Thanks again,
Jeff

So, the setting is being changed back to Automatically install updates?
