Does this machine have anything on it that can't be easily put back on? I'm thinking it may be easier to revert back to the factory install which would likely fix the issue. I want to check first though if that's an option.

It could be refreshed without significant problems. the box does not have a product key sticker. I am trying to put belarc on and see what has been activated. refresh will not lose data as I understand it. If I can get the cd/dvd is that better?

If we had the media we could try a repair install but a refresh would likely be even better. Is this an OEM windows install or a Retail install? Did it come with Windows 8.1 or was it Windows 7 and then upgraded?

I am currently downloading ( on a different PC) a windows 8.1 64 bit ISO file in case it may be needed in the refresh. I hope the belarc product key works or is not needed

I tried to create a recovery disk on a usb drive--- some files were missing so it said use the installation cd/dvd. I got to the refresh your pc screen and went from there.

I got the message " the drive where windows is installed is locked. unlock the drive and try again"

I am not sure I know how to unlock the drive, but could this have been why you were having so much trouble? Do you know how to unlock the drive?

I reran chkdsk but chkdsk /f /x /r

I need to find the results. I will try eventvwr, but can you send me the listchkdskresult file to use? the last time right clicking did not give me any way to run it

OK, so you are not able to use the media so you are trying to restore the machine back to factory, is that correct? What type of machine do you have?
