Windows 10 update problem; "we can't tell if your pc is ready to continue installing windows 10"

It went as far as restarting and trying to install updates yesterday but failed at some point. I'm not sure at what point it failed as I wasn't by the computer at the time. I can let windows update try again though.

Do you receive the message: "We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes." after the reboot?

'As I say I wasn't at the computer when it failed so I just came back to the login screen. I would imagine that it came up with "We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes." though as I've seen this before on a different computer.

The strange thing is, that this does not show up in the log files as a rollback issue, so that's why I asked it..

I would suggest to update again and see what happens, if it fails provide a new copy of the CBS logs and the setupapi.dev.log.

  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\INF folder.
  • Right-click on the file setupapi.dev.log and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file setupapi.dev.zip in your next reply.

Okay I'll let the update run again and try to keep an eye on it. If it fails I'll upload the files asked for.

Okay so it failed again, progress continued steadily until it reached 60%, it then went back to 57% but then continued again up to 75% where it restarted. It then flashed up with "attempting to recover installation..." followed by a couple of restarts then the same message again followed straight away by "undoing changes made to your computer...".

I'll upload the log files when I log back in.

Thanks, please run the System File Checker and DISM again and let me know the result.
Code:
sfc /scannow
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

No integrity violations for sfc /scannow.
Opperation completed successfully for DISM.

This looks good, could you please try to upgrade to Windows 10 22H2 using the Update Assistant.

Download the
61c988c2082b1-updateassistent.png
Windows 10 Update Assistant to your desktop.
  • Right-click on Windows10Upgrade9252.exe and select the option: Run as administrator.
  • Press the Update now button, click after the compatibility check on Next.
  • The Update Assistant will now download the latest Feature Update.
  • After verifying the download, the Feature Update will be installed.
  • When this process is ready, click on the Restart now button to complete the installation.

Too bad, let's try an in-place upgrade with the latest ISO file mounted.

Windows 10 In-Place Upgrage
This will reinstall and update the operating system and fix any corruptions, without removing any file or program. But make always a backup of all your important data!
  • Go to this Microsoft page and under the title Create Windows 10 installation media press on Download tool now.
  • Save the tool on your Desktop and double click to run it.
  • On the License terms page, if you accept the license terms, select Accept.
  • On the What do you want to do page, select Create installation media (USB....) and then select Next.
  • Choose the ISO file option. Once the download is complete, right click the ISO and select the option Mount.
  • Open the Windows File Explorer and open mounted ISO, and run the setup.exe file.
  • Follow the instructions and click on the option Change what to keep.
  • Select the option Keep personal files and apps and click next.
  • Windows Setup will now start the in-place upgrade installation to repair Windows.

This version of Windows is fairly out-dated! Disconnecting the internet connection during the in-place upgrade can bypass (some) issues with older builds, when Windows is trying to connect to Windows Update and trying to install updates on a 'compromised' and/or out-dated system...

update failed again, I didn't see what % it failed at as I wasn't at the computer but the error codes attached below were shown when I logged back in. I had disconnected the internet from the computer during the update.

On a side note is it safe to delete the partition with the label N: now?

Yes, when the system is connected to the internet, Windows will connect to Microsoft's Update Sources and tries to install the 'required' updates. This system is running Windows 10 (RS2) 1703, with ended support on 10-Sept-2018. To avoid conflicts during the in-place upgrade process. it could be help to disconnecting the internet connection..

Notes on your last post:

I had disconnected the internet from the computer during the update.

Now it shows 0x8007025D - 0x2000C

Could you please provide the logs Setupact.log and Setuperr.log from the following path C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther

And the log setupapi.dev.log from the following path C:\$Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback\setupapi
