[SOLVED] Windows 7 64-bit can't update nor run SFC

If you are already taking errors, your memory is bad. Is this a custom built machine? Did you happen to find out where you purchased the memory?

Yes a built machine. Coursair Memory I think memory was purchased from Amazon, I will go down to bestbuy in a few mins to see if I can find a 8 gb dual channel set. the Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-B85-HD3 so I think i can use ddr3-1600 ram.

yes looks like that is what I am seeing.. appears to be bit 10 is stuck high. (From the right starting at bit 0) An example is pattern should be 9bff f8df but is 9bff fAdf over 5400 errors so far and is only on test 10 of pass 0

Replaced the dual channel 8 GB ram with 16 GB dual channel Ram (all that was in stock) and running memtest, still on the first pass but no errors as were on the old set. I'll get back to you once it makes 8 passes.

Took awhile to make 1 pass and it did without errors.. It will probably take till the wee hours of the morning for 8 passes. I can let it go through the 8 or we can continue. Looks like the cause of the problem has been resolved now we should be able to repair and not go backwards again. Let me know what you would like me to do next please.

Sounds good to me. Now with the RAM replaced this should go much easier. Let's start with a scan to see what the previous RAM corrupted.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Much better already.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Good. Let's look at any remaining registry corruption now as well.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.
