[SOLVED] Windows 7 64-bit can't update nor run SFC

Yeah you must have had all sorts of weird things going on. I expect a clean run this time.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Perfect. You're good to go. Your machine is healthy now and you should be able to install any Windows Updates including upgrading to Windows 10 if you decide to go that route.

Brian there may be more update issues with this computer. 8 updates failed. I'm running normal boot and doing a sfc /scannow after which I'll try Surt. I wonder if this is still a result of the bad memory

Can you give me a list of the 8 that failed? The KB numbers? After corruption it's very common to have to manually download and install ones that were available while the corruption existed. We'll be able to tell fairly quick here.

I typed in the failures it wasn't as bad as I thought to type

kb3080149
kb3074230
kb3057154
kb3060716
kb3033929
kb3071756
kb3074550

I see two things we may be able to do to fix this update. Let's start with the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

I logged in as Administrator after a reboot so I could rename the cbs.log file. I just ran the update and this time it passed. I am rebooting so it will take effect.

Message that "this update is not applicable to your computer"

OK. Check for Windows Updates and let me know which updates show need to be installed now. That one may no longer need installed.
