Windows Update Failure, W7-Pro SP1, Lenovo W510

My machine has become somewhat crippled now because iertutil.dll is missing and therefore windows explorer is not starting properly. Nonetheless, here is my cbs log.

Hello atlld,

Please browse to C:\Windows\System32\Logs\CBS\, then right click on CBS.log and choose copy.
Next, right click in an open space on your Desktop and choose paste.
Right click on the CBS.log file on your Desktop and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
When the compression process completes, upload the CBS.zip file from your Desktop to a file sharing service such as OneDrive, DropBox, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.

As I mentioned, Windows Explorer is inoperative, so I can not "copy" or do anything handled by explorer. I am working on getting the zipped file to you another way.

FYI Now my machine is worse than ever. Check for updates won't run at all, and Windows explorer won't run properly. That last update attempt that got to 96% and reverted seemed to have damaged something.

OK. I got a copy of iertutil.dll from another W7 machine and put it into /system32 and now explorer appears to work again

It would appear so. There are some files being linked to IE9 and some to IE11. Let's see if we can revert back an earlier version and then reinstall IE11.

Please be sure to install an alternative browser such as Google Chrome (Chrome) or Mozilla Firefox (Download Firefox — Free Web Browser — Mozilla) etc. if you do not already have one installed before continuing.

Open the Control Panel, then choose Programs and Features. (If in category view, choose Programs, then Programs and Features).
Choose the blue link 'View Installed Updates' in the left side panel.
Wait for the list of installed updates to populate. Once the list stops changing, scroll through the list until you find Internet Explorer 11.
Click on Internet Explorer 11, then choose Uninstall.
Choose Yes, then when the uninstall is complete restart your computer.

If the uninstall fails, please zip and upload CBS.log as before.

Ok, looks like this update is missing some parts. I also see a large number of package keys with missing visibility values.

Let's check with SURT.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

Download and run the System Update Readiness Tool for your version of Windows here: System Update Readiness Tool

NOTE: If you aren't sure if your Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit, check here: How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system

This tool will take some time to complete - when it has finished, attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log with your reply.

Thanks for the info. zcomputerwiz stepped in for me while I was on vacation but I'm back now. Before we go further, can you tell me if you have a Windows 7 Pro with SP1 CD/DVD?

Not 100% sure if they're SP1 but I do have recovery disk set (1 CD + 2 DVD) I burned when I bought the PC.

I'd rather not do anything that would disrupt any installed software though, as I need the installed SW over the next couple weeks.

Recovery media won't work for a repair install unfortunately. If we did do it, it wouldn't affect any of your installed software so don't worry about that. I'll prepare a fix for you. It's a little involved and tedious so it may take a day or two but I'll get back with you.

Please do the following.

Step#1 - Stop Services
1. Click your Start button and type cmd.exe into the search box.
2. Right-click on cmd that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator. Click Continue if prompted with the User Account Control dialog.
3. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt window and hit enter after each one. Note: You will have to right-click your mouse in the command-prompt window and select paste. You can't use the keyboard shortcuts.
sc stop bits
sc stop wuauserv

Step#2 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please
