[SOLVED] Windows Update Issue

Hi,

Thanks for the file it seems the system restore didn't change the COMPONENTS hive...

Locate the folder C:\RegBackup inside open the folder with the computer name, next open the folder named dd-mm-yyyy_hh.mm.ss\C\Windows\System32\Config

(The date and time will match 05-01-2018 I suppose when you run the Tweaking Repair tool the first time) zip the file COMPONENTS that is inside and upload it for me please.

Also try this:

  • Run SURT again. Its like an Update but it can take a long time to do the work. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running
  • Please attach to your post the log from the following location: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

Note: If the file is too big please Zip it and upload the ZIP file to a service like Dropbox, Google Drive, One Drive or upload to SendSpace and just provide the link for the file here.

Hi,

  • open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  • type or Copy & Paste the following command:
    reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control /v RegistrySizeLimit /t REG_DWORD /d 0xffffffff /f
  • Restart the Computer

After the Restart:

  • open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  • type or Copy & Paste the following command:
    reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS c:\windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS

Note: The expected result after both the reg commands above is "The operation completed successfully." or equivalent, please report the result especially if you get some error!

Hi,
In continuation to the above post from me, I observed from CBS log that the system is failing to install one update KB3004375. This is an update I can see as already installed in the system. This was installed way back in February, 2015. Wondering why is the system trying to install this again? Should I try uninstalling the update and try installing KB4338818 once again? Please advise.

Hi,

That reference can be ignored, its common that installing one update it checks for older ones...

The log show there is a file missing lets fix that...

SFCFix Script

!!! WARNING !!! The following fix is only relevant for this system and no other, applying this fix on another computer will not work and most likely will cause problems...
  • Download SFCFix.exe (by Niemiro) and save it to the Desktop
  • Download the file SFCFIX.ZIP, attached below, and save this to your Desktop
  • On your Desktop, make sure you have the two files:
    myjIXnC.png
    SFCFix.exe and
    sfpcJCen14An3ndjNGCI7mByhjHJud.png
    SFCFIX.zip
  • Drag the file SFCFIX.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it
  • The SFCFix tool will process the script
  • Upon completion, a log file SFCFix.txt should be created on your Desktop
  • Open the SFCFix.txt log and copy & paste the contents to your post

Hi,

Try to install the update again using the downloaded file, post the CBS.log if it fails.

Hi,

The fix didn't worked! lets try a different way...

Install Update using Dism
  1. Please download kb4093118 http://download.windowsupdate.com/c..._2bbb81cd98fb80623b7afa3dcb2da73f28322ea3.msu save the file to c:\windows\temp
  2. change the name of the update file to a smaller name windows6.1-kb4093118-x86.msu
(keep the extension .msu in the end of the file name in case its visible if not ignore that)
  3. open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  4. type or Copy & Paste the following commands line by line:

    cd /d c:\windows\temp
    expand windows6.1-kb4093118-x86.msu -f:* C:\windows\temp
    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\windows\temp\windows6.1-kb4093118-x86.cab

  5. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)?
  6. Make sure to allow the computer to restart if prompted.

If you receive any other message:
  7. Right-click on the Command Prompt window and click Select All, this will invert all of the colours by selecting the text, now press enter. All of this text is now copied.
  8. Paste (Ctrl+V) it into your next post please.

Hi,
Just to confirm, do you really want me to download kb4093118? The reason I am asking is that the problem is with the installation of the update kb4338818 and not with kb4093118.

Yes because the file that is reported as missing belongs to the KB4093118 and other components installed by this update may be missing so we use dism to fix that ...

Hi,
Thanks for the confirmation. I've run the DISM script successfully. Please find the output as below:

Hi,
The update got installed successfully this time. I performed a search for updates and the update showed up once again. I tried to install it and it was successful this time as well. Thanks for your help.

Good. My suggestion is that you configure Windows Update to Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them this way you can Skip/Hide all the updates named Preview... they are not needed for "normal users" and frequently create problems... including problems installing the final version of the updates.

Thanks. That’s what I typically do. I hide all the optional updates, particularly if they are Preview updates and install the important ones only.
