Something strange is happening!

Retrieve the Components Hive
  1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file
  2. Please copy the COMPONENTS file to your desktop
    Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again
  3. Right-click on this file on your Desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your Desktop
  4. If file will is too large to upload to the forum please share the file using a service like Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, or upload to www.sendspace.com and just provide the link for the file here

The file seems ok but windows can't load it!

Restart the machine and try again, maybe the machine don't have enough free memory! any idea why?

Hi,
I have restarted the machine and tried again and the result is the same. Memory should not be a problem. All other programs are running fine.
If it helps, I had a similar problem with 2018-05 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Embedded Standard 7 for x86-based Systems (KB4103718) in May and you solved the issue. You will see the fix in post # 97 in this very thread.

This is a different problem...

Can you check the folder C:\FRST\Hives to see if there is a file name COMPONENTS inside and tell me the size of this file?

Hi,
There is no file with name COMPONENTS in C:\FRST\Hives; but there is one called COMPON~1 with a size of 62.8 MB.

Thanks.

Hi,

By some strange reason it seems that your system isn't actually saving the registry changes and that is the reason for a very big components file!

Open the Command Prompt as Administrator an Copy & Paste the following command:
Code:
 [B]fsutil resource setautoreset true %systemdrive%\[/B]

Restart the computer and then check the folder C:\Windows\System32\config to confirm if the file COMPONENTS is smaller than 187MB.

Please execute the following

  • Highlight the contents of the box below, right click on it and select Copy
    start::
    cmd: dir /S /A %systemroot%\System32\config
    end::
  • Execute FRST/FRST64 right click on the icon
    FRST.gif
    and choose Run as Administrator.
    FRST_Fix.png
  • Press the Fix button just once and Wait. After the fix the system needs to restart if the tool does not request it please Restart the computer.
  • The tool will make a log (Fixlog.txt) on the same location as FRST/FRST64 please post it in your next reply.

Hi,
Need a clarification here. What will happen to the content copied in step # 1. I don't see it's use in any of the later steps. Can you please confirm?

Sure. Its a different way to run a Fix using FRST, the instructions from step 1 are copied to the Windows Clipboard and FRST will execute them like if you provided a file fixlist.txt.
