This should fix the last five. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.

Thank you so much!!

Now I'm going to take a deep breath and try to install the updates again, a few at a time. Hopefully third time is a charm.
I'll be out most of the day on a job, will report back tonight after I have a chance to finish them.

I am really beginning to hate Windows Update.

I choose 5 from the queue to install (KB3063917, KB3056819, KB3033890, KB3042553, KB3045171). Exact same thing happened again, but even worse this time. On reboot it hung at Starting Windows and after 15 minutes the monitor went into sleep mode. I went into Startup Repair and it hung on Attempting Repairs. After 15 min or so the monitor went into sleep mode. Tried Startup Repair again and this time got BSOD with Fatal System Error 0000212 and (0xc0000034 and 0x00020900). Tried bypassing Startup Repair and it went right to BSOD.

Everything is fine until I try to run Windows Update, I really don't understand this.

I managed to get a system restore to finally complete successfully.

I just don't know what to do, this is three times I have tried to update windows and each time the problem gets worse.

Did you restore to a point before we made all of our fixes? If so we will have to make them all again. Let's first find out if there is any corruption and then we can go from there. Please do the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

I was able to restore to right before I attempted the updates

If it helps, I checked the status of the attempted updates and saw that KB3063917 and KB 3056819 installed successfully, while KB3033890 and KB3045171 failed with error code 800F0816 and KB3042553 failed with error code 80242016.

That does help. Thanks. Please download KB3033890 and save to your desktop.

1. Attempt to install only this one from the downloaded file.
2. If it fails, please zip and attach the following two logs.
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log (you may have to copy this to your desktop first)
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

It installed and configured without a problem, then when continuing to boot into Windows computer hung again. Again I tried leaving it alone while monitor was dark hoping it was running in the background but no go. Took me three attempts (one Startup Repair, two Safe Mode) before I could get a successful system restore (same restore point with no corruption as before). :banghead:

That is really odd behavior. It would be nice if you could borrow a monitor to see if you have the same "going to sleep" issues with it. Please do the following.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Well I was hoping to avoid dropping $500 on a new monitor but the problem sure does seem to somehow involve my current monitor so I don't think there's any avoiding it. I checked a couple days ago to verify that all of my drivers are all up to date. I'm going back to my preferred brand. The new monitor should be here on Thursday, it's not something I can get locally. Unless you notice something in this cbs log, please leave my thread open until I get the new monitor installed so I can rule that out as the problem.

Thank you so much for your patience and help, I really do appreciate it!

Wow, $500? I was hoping you could just borrow one from a friend, co-worker, neighbor for a few minutes to see if this may be an issue. I really don't want to find out that the monitor has nothing to do with this.

It was on the list of things to do eventually anyway, this just made it a priority. I'm self-employed so no co-workers and chasing down friends would most likely take longer than just buying a new one. My current monitor won't wake from sleep mode unless I unplug it and plug back in most of the time (and yes I tried that when it happens during these problems with no luck) which the company told me was normal behavior, it now has some light leakage and shortly after I first set it up I remember having some issues with Catalyst Control and having to reinstall that program. Ever since I bought it I've been kicking myself for trying to save money by buying a different brand than usual. I need an IPS monitor, and $500 is still on the cheap end. If the problem isn't caused by the monitor I'll just go back to a dual-monitor set up, so it won't go to waste. I'm a multi-tasker ;)

Well we can rule out the monitor. New monitor installed and I tried installing the standalone version of KB3033890 you had posted here and I still get the exact same problem, monitor goes into sleep mode and windows won't boot. And it took 5 tries before I could successfully do a system restore.

Observation - GPU seems to be getting excessively hot and fan runs very high when system reboots after running Updates. I noticed that I don't seem to be able to get through a system restore until I walk away for a while and let things cool down? If I reboot immediately and fan is still running high, it hangs and shut down. If I wait 20 minutes, and fan is running normal when I reboot and attempt system restore, it is successful. Which makes me think that something is overheating and shutting down the system. But I do not think it is a hardware problem because I use my machine pretty hard with graphic intensive programs, often running several at same time, and I don't have any issues. The ONLY time I have a problem is when I try to install Windows Updates.

OK, I have a few more ideas.
