Windows Update mess, black screen of death when running any restore/repair options

Actually that was what I was hoping to see. Let's take a look at your COMPONENTS hive. Please do the following.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Looks good. I need take a look at some data in your Software hive.

Step#1 - Export CBS Registry Key

  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file CBS (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Thank you. I'll assume that KB3045171 is still one of the updates that needs to be installed.

Let's focus on that one for the moment.

Install Update Manually
1. Please download KB3045171 and save to your desktop.
2. Attempt to install only this one from the downloaded file.
3. If it fails, please zip and attach the following two logs.
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log (you may have to copy this to your desktop first)
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

No luck.

Thank you for sticking with me on this, I'm so frustrated because it just happened out of the blue.

If we look at the Windows Update log we see the following. Look at the driver that is referenced right before the error happens. It's the Dell monitor driver. Before that it's a Western Digital driver. Do you happen to have a USB drive plugged in to your computer while you are attempting windows updates?

Yes, my external backup drives are USB and one is a WD.
The Dell monitor driver should be for my new monitor, but I went Dell - LG - Dell, and I didn't need to install a new driver for the new monitor.

At this point I think we have only a couple options. Uninstall Service Pack 1 and then re-install Service Pack 1 or do a repair install. Are you able to try the uninstall route?

No uninstall button for SP1 and from the date it looks like it was installed before shipping but I haven't tried the command prompt method yet...since I haven't been able to install any updates for 8 weeks now I'm really worried that I won't be able to reinstall SP1 and not sure what problems might that cause?

Dell is shipping me the media so I can do a repair install, I should have it in 2 days. I'm surprised because I had read that once out of warranty you are at their mercy and some people reported being charged $200 for the Windows install disks out of warranty. All these years I've never had to repair my OS, guess I've been lucky but it made me lazy about following up to get them when I buy a new computer. I'm still not 100% certain that what they are sending me will let me do a repair install instead of a clean install, I explained what I needed to do and he said yes, so hopefully he is sending the right thing.

When I get the disks from Dell should I still see if I can uninstall SP1 via the command prompt first, or should I just attempt the repair install?

As long as the media you are getting comes with SP1 then you should definitely attempt a repair install. If it doesn't come with SP1 then you have no choice but to uninstall SP1 before doing the repair. Hopefully it will come with SP1 though.

Thanks for keeping me updated. I've very interested in this getting resolved for you.

Thank you I will make sure it has SP1. I hope they get it right because I sure could use an "easy button" right now.
Power was out for about 15 hours last night/today, so I couldn't even try anything until they got it back on. :thud:

I just don't understand this. I got the OS disk from Dell, exactly what I needed - Operating System (Already Installed On Your Computer) Reinstallation DVD Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit. I just spent almost 2 hours going through the repair install, was 2/3 of the way through and I left the room because I was tired of watching it. When I came back...sure enough the screen was dark and the fan was running super high. When I rebooted it rolled back the update and gave me a popup that said this version could not be installed and I should run MS Upgrade Advisor to see if it's compatible with my computer.

I don't understand what the problem is. I'm starting to think that my only alternative is to just never update Windows again. The updates for MSE are going through fine without a problem. I have absolutely NO problem with my machine (other than svchost.exe shooting through the roof every other day) until I try to update Windows. It doesn't make any sense to me.

:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

I'm going to try the repair install again, but I'll be out of pocket for a few days so it won't be until Monday.

Bummer. Make sure you do a clean boot before attempting the repair again. I would also uninstall your Antivirus completely before attempting the repair. Let me know how it goes. Thanks.
