[SOLVED] Windows Vista - Distorted Audio Issue

I don't know what to tell you at this point outside of reinstalling Windows and see if that helps.

You have an old system on your hands (my guess - about 10 years old) that device manufacturers are not updating drivers for any longer. I would think that an audio driver update would solve this (just an educated guess), but none are available.

Sorry that we could not help with the audio issue.

no problem.
thanks to your patience, tenacity and tech skills we got the WiFi going again... VERY much appreciated !
keep up the good work plodr.

@jcgriff2:

thank you for your help in trying to resolve this issue.

@xilolee

hi there xilolee,

thank you very much for joining the mission to tackle this challenge.:thumbsup2:

did as instructed. also checked flash player up to date. streaming audio distortion issue persists.

what else can I try to fix this, besides re-install windows?

Open windows control panel, in the top-right corner click on view by:, click small icons (or large icons), click flashplayer.
Both in storage and advanced tabs, click Delete all....

Do you have Windows Media Player installed/enabled and fully updated?

It's my understanding (but I may be wrong) that most browsers rely on those Windows Media features/codecs being available, as they should be by default with all non-N Windows versions, for audio playback.

Hi there satrow, thanks for showing up and contributing to this thread.
that´s an interesting point you are making. codecs had crossed my mind before but I do not know much about that topic.

checking WMP all I can say is it is installed/enabled and appears to play back media normally.
how can I check if it is fully updated?

you are aware that the audio distortion issue is only with streaming videos on wifi?

thank you

hi xilolee, not sure how to do that and if it would help.
the issue has persisted while traveling and connecting via many different wlan networks.
during streaming the video part plays back ok while audio tracks are distorted...stuttering, squeaking, lapses, breaks etc.
this happens across all video platforms I tried with different browsers...tried Chrome, Safari, Firefox.

Log in to your router settings (it's the gateway in your wifi connection properties/details, usually something like 192.168.1.1).
You can try to click --> http://192.168.1.1
It could ask your username and password (the ones to access your router settings): you can find them (the default ones, at least) probably on your router manufacturer website (or on portforward.com or routerpasswords.com or setuprouter.com).
When you are in its settings, go to the wireless section of your router and you should find the channels setting (from 1 to 13).

You can also show us the screenshot of your device properties (especially advanced, power management and driver tabs).

There are also remnants of BitDefender, while you are using AVAST.
You can probably delete its service with sc delete gzserv (from an elevated command prompt), but maybe a better approach is to download bitdefender free setup.exe and then:
- uninstall avast.
- install bitdefender and uninstall it.
- quick try: while you aren't using antiviruses (and there aren't remnants of them), you could try to see if two or three youtube videos are working.
- reinstall avast (or another antivirus of your choice).

thank you, for suggestions and instructions.

1 ) (SC) DeleteService SUCCESS ..audio still distorted
2) after that, tried all available channels (1-11), result as above
3) also tried streaming video with AVAST turned off...see above.

again, streaming video parts works fine, audio is distorted.

Right-click your audio icon in the system tray, click playback devices.
Right-click your speakers icon, click properties.
Click the enhancements tab, tick disable all sound effects, click ok.

Two thoughts, neither of which deals with sound.

Reading post #3, there appears to be issues with Windows itself.
Go here Black Viper's Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Service Configurations | Black Viper | www.blackviper.com
and click on column visibility. I clicked on all the items I did not want to see so I was left with only a few columns. (see attachment)

Check that the Service has the proper name, and that it is set to what it should be.

Second, please post a speedtest so we can see what sort of download speeds you get on wireless. If the speeds are low, sound can be distorted.

I assume that if you download what you want to play and play it on the computer, rather than streaming from the internet, it plays correctly.
