[SOLVED] WMI Provider Host APPCRASH

Another question, I was going to do a clean boot this morning and when I opened msconfig, it's already on "Selective Startup" for some reason. Shouldn't it have been on "Normal Startup"?

It may have been that way if you made any changes prior using msconfig. Go ahead and follow the clean boot steps fully and see if any changes?

If no changes after clean boot then proceed with the following:

Download inssider

Inssider
inSSIDer 4.2.4.1 Download - TechSpot
Double click to install it. Then run it by right click and Run As Admin.

It will show you a graph in the bottom right that has your signal in blue and competing signals in orange and yellow. It may also recommend a different channel which might have less interference.

Moving to a different channel (by logging on to your router) can drastically improve performance. There is usually a section for WiFi and one option is Channel which usually has value Auto. You can change it to a certain channel.

I ran clean Boot and tried to download that wireless 9260 file (118 MB) and it died at 52.7 MB. After going back to msconfg, I re-enabled everything and changed it to "Normal Startup" as I'm not sure why it was on "Selective Startup".
Question 1: Are we done with "Mini Tool Kit" and "Tcpview" and the txt files they created? It looks like they are both just exe files and didn't install to the system.
Question 2: On the bottom link for Acrylicwifi, should I download the free version for personal home use? If so what does it do for me?

I installed the inSSIDer4 and after installation I right clicked and there is no selection for Run as Administrator. Also when I just double clicked to run it, it wants a license key which I don't have.

Okay then that eliminates any software service issues.

It looks like Inssider is no longer free so use the Free Personal addition of the following. It works similar. You are basically looking at the RSSI and trying to get the best signal possible. The lower the better. If you would like run the program and take a screenshot after allowing it to run a few min.

I took 2 screenshots without SSID and MAC address. The top colored line in the 1st screenshot is mine, it picked up a neighbor's WiFi in the 1st shot.

Your signal level is really good. Are you really close to the router? Your settings are only allowing up to 54mbps as the max speed. What are your router settings? Is it set to WPA2 for security and 802.11AC/n only. It also looks like you are using 2.4GHz instead of 5GHz which will provide faster speeds as well. One issue is you are using WPA-PSK-TKIP and should set it to WPA2 AES.

Are you really close to the router?
Yes, 5/6 ft. from it.

That's all I can get out of this old router as far as I know.

My router is old, Linksys WRT54G that I have had for years. It's only capable of 2.4 GHZ and WPA-PSK-TKIP.
Your signal level is really good
Yes, as long as I am not downloading a file from either the internet or from my other computers. That's where the problem is. When I went to download that small file for the Acrylic WiFi Home ( 4.3 MB file ), it stopped at 0.4 MB and I had to cancel and retry to finally get it. The new Gigabyte MB wireless AC 9260 is the only one that has this problem.
I have an HP ProBook laptop with only Wireless AC 7260 being used on it ( no ethernet cable hooked up to it ) and it doesn't have any problems what so ever with transferring files or downloading any size file from the internet.
I have WiFi on my Win 7 Desktop that doesn't have any problems downloading or transferring files.

Okay. Then it seems like it may be a hardware issue and may be time to send to manufacturer. Only other thing I can thing to try would be create and run a Linux live drive such as mint cinnamon or Ubuntu and test. That would elimate the possibilit of a any software, driver issues.

You should really consider replacing your router to utilize the enhanced speed you would get from the card. They are really reasonable for a decent router. Let me know if you would like some suggestions.

Unfortunately I think your right and I'm going to have to bite the bullet and tear this thing down.

Just curious if you have seen anything in all that info I sent to pinpoint the WMI Provider Host App crash's because you stated that it probably has nothing to do with the internet problem??

As to a new router, I have thought about getting a newer one but I'm a bit afraid of the setup in changing over to a new one and another thing is that I'm not sure it would help me that much since I am on a wireless radio out here in the sticks. There is a radio on my house that gets a signal from an Access Point approx. 1 to 2 miles from here.
I was looking at a WRT1900AC router awhile back but never pulled the trigger on it.
Any suggestions/advice you have would be welcome, thanks. :)

NOTE: I asked earlier but you never replied, "Are we done with "Mini Tool Kit" and "Tcpview" and the txt files they created? It looks like they are both just exe files and didn't install to the system."

I did see multiple crashes but the service is running. See the following link for information about what this is.
What Is the WMI Provider Host (WmiPrvSE.exe), and Why Is It Using So Much CPU?

You would probably be surprised how much a new router may help you. Make sure you purchase from a retailer that offers a good return policy in case it does not help much. Setting up a new router is pretty easy and we are always here if needed.

The Linksys WRT1900AC is a good router. I am partial to ASUS routers and have always had good experiences with them. You will also find they are some of the top rated routers mentioned online. Really depends on your needs and budget but I have listed some that I recommend below in different price ranges and it sounds like you don't need the latest technology based on your setup.

ASUS RTAC1200
Asus RT-AC1200 Routers - Newegg.com

ASUS RT-AC1750
ASUS RT-AC1750 Wireless Router - 1750 Mbps - 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz - Gigabit Ethernet - 802.11b/a/g/n/ac

ASUS RT-AC68U - These are the ones I have.
ASUS RT-AC68U Wireless Router - 1900 Mbps - 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz - Gigabit Ethernet - 802.11b/a/g/n/ac

Yes you can delete these files.

Question: Before I get RMA authorization and start tearing down this computer, What happens to Windows when I replace the board. Do I need to reinstall windows from scratch and re-activate it or will my current SSD & activation just pick up where it left off?

What all are you going to have to replace. If the motherboard or if you just want to be safe Download and run the following tool and save a report of your Windows and other program licenses. Also if you are going to send in your whole system or hard drive then make an image backup with the following tool before hand to save your drive as it currently is now. I also recommend that you create image backups on a regular basis as the best form of backing up your data.

1. Create an image backup with the program below or at least backup your important files.

I just requested and was granted an RMA. It will only be the Mother Board going back so I will strip it of Ram, CPU, Video card, etc. and send the bare MB back.

I have cloning software but I haven't been able to find any USB attachments that will connect an NVME SSD to clone an NVME SSD. When I pull this NVME SSD off of the MB for shipping, it will still have everything on it so that's why I asked about what happens when I get either a new MB back or if they just fix this one. If they just repair then it shouldn't be a problem but if it's a replacement MB, OS and Activation may not recognize it.

As far as the hard drive, my experience is they usually set everything back to factory defaults. I would confirm before sending if you do not have a backup.

Yes, those adapters are only available in other countries from what I know and are very expensive. You would be better off buying another hard drive or USB drive for your backups. Is that the only drive you have for the backup or clone. An image backup will take less space since Imaging a hard drive is like creating a compressed file of your OS. All of the files needed to run Windows, plus anything you have saved on your hard drive, will be contained within the image.

If they replace your motherboard then you will need the key to re-active Windows more then likely. Again I would just Belarc program to save a list of the licenses.

Since it's a problem with just the MB, I'm assuming that the stripped MB is all I need to send. The RMA said 1 pc. which I assume is just the MB. Their RMA instructions are extremely vague.
As to Belarc, actually I have been using that for years, good program and good price (free).
I really haven't had time to get set up for backing up the SSD even though I spent a lot of time looking for an adapter for cloning but they don't seem to be available yet. So I backed up all the software programs that I may have to re-install.
My guess is that they will just replace the MB with a new one since it is a hardware issue.

After thinking this over, I'm wondering, since I have this WMI Provider Host problem, would it be better to start from scratch and just re-install W10 1709 and start all over again? I contacted Gigabyte and all I am sending is the MB so it's probably just going to be an exchange of MB's.
