[SOLVED] WMI Provider Host APPCRASH

Thanks for the suggestion and the USB looks easy enough but I'm not sure I understand the point of running linux on the windows machine. Are you suggesting that I change over from Windows to linux after trying it out or is there something about the linux live that fixes windows?

This is only to test and you are only running linux live directly from the USB you created. All you have to do is create the USB and boot to it to run. This will eliminate any issues that Windows may be causing if applicable. If you get the same results with Linux then it is most likely a hardware issue. No, I am not suggesting to convert to Linux.

Sorry, I guess I'm a bit dense as I still don't see the purpose since I would be running linux ( which is a different OS ) instead of windows.
I appreciate the suggestion but I just don't understand it.

The reason for trying linux is that it would eliminate anything in Windows that may be causing the issues you are experiencing. We often use Linux to verify if there is a hardware issue or if it is a software/driver issue with Windows.

So I assume that you are referring to the Wireless hardware then? If so, it's too late because I completely tore down the computer today and have boxed up the MB ready to be sent back to Gigabyte. My fingers are crossed that I won't have that problem with a replacement/repaired MB :smile9:
If you are talking about the WMI error at boot, then I still don't understand but would try your suggestion.

Yes, I am talking about testing of the Wifi issues. Hopefully the new board will fix your issues. Please keep me updated.

Thanks, I just mailed it by UPS today so it will probably be a week at least before I get a return and then I start building again. I will let you know the results when it is back together again.

Looks like my estimate of a week is going to be wrong, Gigabyte received the MB on 9/14/18 and as of this morning 9/19/18 they haven't scanned or opened the box it's in yet. I called yesterday and was told that they are "backed up" with RMA's so I assume that a lot of people are having problems with Gigabyte products. Not a good sign

Well, they acknowledged receiving the MB this morning and this afternoon I checked the status and saw where they reported "No problems found in multi configurations" so I have a bad feeling that they are going to just ship the board back as is (whenever they get around to it).
When I get a MB back I am going to do a "Clean" install of 1709 and I was checking Gigabytes website and there are 2 Chipset drivers listed. One is an older one but it has in parentheses that it includes Chipset + USB driver and the newer one doesn't mention USB driver, which one should I D/L since this board is loaded with USB ports (I'm assuming the one that list's the USB driver)?

Sorry to hear that. I assume they tested your wireless hardware as well. The clean install will be a good test as well as trying Linux live USB to see if either makes any difference.

Before clean install I would recommend that you Backup your drivers using doubledriver

How to Do a Clean Install of Windows 10

After installing you should update any drivers found at your Gigabyte motherboard site and other device manufacture sites especially your GPU. Always use the latest drivers for Chipset or any other devices listed.

I also recommend that you disable Windows 10 driver updates as follows:

Disable Driver Updates for Devices Windows 10:
Open the Control Panel and Select Devices and Printers.
Under Devices, right-click on your PC icon (computer name)
Select Device installation settings from the menu
Select No under "Do you want to automatically download manufacturers' apps …."

According to Gigabyte support, the first round of testing is hardware and then they do software tests, which evidently haven't been performed yet. The support person said that he would stress that they specifically look at the wireless.

As to the "Clean" install, I plan on putting the USB 3.0 stick with 1709 in and hit the power button and hit F12 to change boot order to the USB stick and re install 1709 from scratch. I originally bought a retail copy of W10 Pro license so there shouldn't be any problem re activating it once re installed even with a different MB if that becomes the case.
On my original OS install I noticed something that I thought was a little strange. I had my NVME 512 GB stick in the #1 NVME slot and a 1TB SATA 3 HDD hooked up to the #1 (not #0) SATA port on the MB and when it got to the part showing the drives to format/install in custom/Advanced, it showed the 1TB SATA drive as drive 0 and the NVME drive as Drive 1 so I just chose the 512 GB drive to format/install. So it ended up that C (OS) was installed on Drive 1 and the Storage drive (which I formatted as MBR after the install) was still drive 0.
The reason I'm bringing this up is that I think this time on the clean install, I will have the 1TB SATA drive completely unhooked before doing the clean install. Does that make sense??

Then hopefully they may find an issue with the Wifi.

Since you are going to do a clean install you should consider getting the latest Windows version 1803 from the following link using the Media Creation tool to create the USB:
Download Windows 10

The SATA ports are assigned by how the drives are connected to the motherboard. It does not make a lot of difference usually. However, with Windows 10 I have had and heard of some issues of not using SATA 0 as the OS drive.

Yes, I always recommend only having the main drive connected during install.

Create a USB keyusing the Windows Media Creation tool. Disconnect device from Internet anddisconnect all unnecessary devices that maybe attached. Ideally only the bootdrive in machine will be connected. I also recommend that you use GPT this time rather than MBR for your partitions. Let me know if other questions.

The reason I chose 1709 is because I have it on my HP laptop and it seems to work well on it. From all the forums that I have been reading, 1803 is still having some issues, hence my decision for 1709.

The only SATA port that would be in use since I will not have the SATA storage drive hooked up would be the Optical Drive. Should I unhook that also??

So you recommend that I reformat the 1TB SATA Storage drive as GPT then (after getting the OS installed on the NVME stick)?

Have you received your computer back?

I would agree if it were several months ago, however at this point it is pretty safe and 1809 is going to be released around October. A lot of issues with 1803 were caused by users who upgraded over previous versions.

It is not necessary to disconnect your optical drive.

This is not necessary since it is only 1TB. However, it is your choice and can be converted after installing. I was talking about the main drive for Windows.

I went looking at the MB drivers tonight and the latest chipset driver has me a bit confused. I downloaded the version 18.x.x.xxxx that's 719 MB but I see that there is a new one issued on 9/21/18 that is only 64 MB and the newer one is a lesser version number. What's up with that??

I am not sure why the version would be listed that way, but it is a newer version. I guess you can ver. 18.10.20 and then the latest ver. and see if it updates or not.

Have you received your computer back?
No, I have not received the Mother Board back and when checking the Gigabyte RMA status this morning, there is no change to the status so it's still sitting there. No further testing or shipping is reported.

The main drive for windows (the NVME stick) would be formatted by the clean install, as far as I know there wouldn't be a choice.

That's to bad. Maybe they will figure something out.

Yes, as long as you use the Windows USB labeled as "UEFI" and not Legacy or Bios mode (MBR)

Not sure about a "label" since I used the Media Creation Tool to put the 1709 on the USB stick. UEFI was never mentioned on the download.

As to the Mother Board, I guess that if I don't see anything tomorrow I will either call or email their support to see if they just threw it under the bench or if they are actually working on it. This is really stretching into a long time.

That's perfect and you should not have any issues then if you used the media create tool.
