[SOLVED] 64 bit applications not starting after MS or Firefox update

Hi,

Windows 7 Ultimate, Asus Republic of Gamers Extreme III MB, 24G mem, 19TB storage, i7 950 at 3.07G.

About a month ago Firefox upgraded itself to 17 I think, and ceased to start. I don't remember the error message but essentially, attempting to run it produced a 0xc000007b error. Over the next few days, I found that CorelGraphics Suite X6 64 bit applications would not start, as several Adobe Creative Suite applications (but not all) also failed to start.

I've gone as far as I know how. Read,Read,Read, then ran SFC, and found several items not fixed. Only 2 related to Intel platform.

I managed to find where the files were located, and attempted to copy them over from the Windows install disk, but they were older than the installed files. In any event, this did not help. My current options are to restore a Dec. 25, 2012 full backup. Acronis Home 13 has been unable to restore to my Raid 0 array, and there tech support cannot determine why.

I started out on this system with a 64G SSD as system drive. Fearing I would soon run out of space, I started installing most applications on the D drive, a 2TB raid 0 array (not bright, I know). Have since managed to clone the raid to a 3tb single drive, but I still have some hope of fixing the actual issue prior to using this outdated backup.

I will attempt to attach a condensed report form SFC ("could not repair"s only). First time posting here.

I remember there was a similar issue resolved here about a month ago, which a web search located and led me here. Any help or insight would be appreciated. My experience level is primarily applications. I program in some high level languages (Vbasic, Vbasic for apps, Alpha4, Ruby, etc), and have always been able to resolve most tech issue on my own. I can use basic text editors and or programming editors, and not afraid to attempt anything. I am at my end on this one however.

Any help or insights appreciated. TIA.

Latest version of Firefox is 19 on the release channel.

The logs seem to show a few dll's that are missing along with GdiPlus.dll. GDI+ is used by quite a few applications on Windows for graphics. I even included some programming examples on this forum using GDI.

You need to be able to put these dlls back onto your system in working order though. Do you have the Windows 7 install DVD or a repair disk?

Thanks for your attention. I do have the system disk (dvd) and tried to replace those files (searching with "Whereis" to locate them,) and this either did not work, or made no difference. It's been about 3 weeks since I gave up due to other pressing issues, and just used 32bit version of the graphics software that will not load. The system disk is over 2 years old.

I only tried replacing the Intel platform files. Did not think the AMD files would make a difference on my system.

Thanks,

Hello, and welcome to Sysnative :)

First, I want to run the System Update Readiness Tool, just to check out a few more locations. Then I will grab the full CBS.log and use that to fix your SFC corruptions. Can I ask that you please make no further attempt at fixing these corruptions, as it is important that the logfiles represent the current state of your system. If I create a fix based on the logfiles, but you make a change to the system in the meantime, bad stuff can happen. Thank you :)

So, please download and install the System Update Readiness Tool from here: What is the System Update Readiness Tool?

Please save the download somewhere convenient you can later find it as we may well need it again later. Save you a second download :)

Also please be aware that the tool can take up to an hour (very occasionally even longer) to complete. Please be patient.

Once it has completed, please follow the instructions here: Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions

to export your CBS folder, and upload it to a new post in this thread. I will analyse the logfiles and get back to you.

Thank you!

Richard

It would be possible to create a clean environment of the same Windows OS, and port over these files manually. Lots of people do not like going to this kind of extent however.

I know very well that it is possible. I have been doing it for years, and I have improved my technique considerably over that time. I now have automated and semi-automated tools, I use the whole CBS.log for speed and safety reasons I have already explained, and I source files directly from Windows Update files, matching hashes as one final double check of compatibility and corruption, rather than creating clean environments which may or may not contain the correct Windows Update, locale, language pack, optional component, etc. etc.

Thanks, Richard. I will download the latest version of the System ..... and run it this evening. I'm sure I have a version not more that 6 months old ... somewhere.

No, this occured around January 17th or 18th, best I remember. There were both Windows7 and Firefox updates during that period. I have Windows set to download but not install, and Firefox to only notify. I usually install after a week or so without news. Thanks

Following directions, I have downloaded and run the Windows update readiness tool, and will attach the CBS.ZIP folder here. Thanks.

Thank you very much for that. Glad I ran the System Update Readiness Tool (it fixed a few other small, as of yet undiscovered, problems).

I will post you a fix for the SFC corruptions as soon as I source good replacements for all 8 files. Please hang in there :)

Where did you see the 0xc000007b exception code error?

STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_FORMAT

[TD]{Bad Image} %hs is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

Any doubt that the error message was in fact 0xc000007b?

Was it a BSOD with a bugcheck (STOP error) = 0x0000007b?

Bugcheck 0x7b = INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE = Windows cannot find the OS partition during boot-up.

Regardless, be sure that your SSD firmware is up-to-date.

None at all. I saw it so often it's burned into my brain. All 64 bit programs that will not run display the bad image error as soon as their shortcut is clicked. I don't have (at least not that it affects my day to day use of the computer) any issues with this system, except about 3 grand or so worth of software suddenly refused to run. Corel Graphics Suite x6 (64bit) doesn't run, 32 bit version does. About 6 Adobe products (64 bit) ceased to run, but Photoshop CS6, and Premier CS5.5 run fine. Lightroom 4 doesn't run, but version 3 does.

Firefox is the only software that does not produce this error message. I doesn't do anything. No error message, no attempt to start, nothing. I had to go back to version 12 to get an operable version of Firefox, which I still run, AND, I am pretty sure that
Firefox update was responsible for this mess I have now (version 17 update or bug fix I think.)

Thanks

I'm glad to hear that all is well now.

Curiosity, please --

Where did the 0xc000007b error message display?

Tooltip balloon?
Windows Error Reporting (WERCON) screen on desktop?
Event Viewer?

Exception 0xc000007b is not one that I see every day.

Thanks,

Can you run this file? This was a quick test application I compiled in Visual Studio 2012 under a 64 bit configuration using .NET 3.5, which you should have installed on your system by default already.

Got this in the CMD screen -

If you can see this, then your machine can interpret the x64 bit architecture for programs.

Press any key to continue...

That's what you should see if everything is good. This tells me that you are on a x64 OS too :) That's all this test is though, a quick portable application to test if you can run a 64-bit program on your system.

I look for certain ENV variables in the jcgriff2 BSOD app -

It was helpful back when x64 exploded in ~2008. These days, everyone is assumed to run x64 unless otherwise noted.

When is the last time you saw an x86 BSOD dump?

I have no idea -- many months.
