I cannot get any updates. When I tell it to check for updates, I get an 80070002 error. When I try to "Turn Windows features on or off," the window comes up empty - i.e., I cannot see any programs to select. Microsoft Security Essentials will update and a full scan did not find anything. Malwarebyte scan was also clean.

I ran the SURT tool (Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu).

SFCFix returned the following:

SFCFix version 2.4.5.0 by niemiro.

Hi owr084 :)

My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your issue. Follow the instructions below please.

Exporting the HKLM\Software Key
Follow the instructions below to export the HKLM\Software Key from the Registry and upload it.
  • On Windows 7, click on the Start Menu button, then enter Regedit, right-click on the icon that will appear and select Run as Administrator;
  • On Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, press on the Win key + S keys, enter Regedit, right-click on the icon that will appear and select Run as Administrator;
  • In Regedit, in the left-pane, navigate to the Registry key below and select it by clicking on it:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
  • Once the key is selected, click on the File menu and select Export...;
  • From there Save menu, change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*);
  • Name the file Software (without any file extension) and save it on your Desktop;
  • Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and send me the download URL via PM;

Follow the instructions below please.
  • Press on the Windows + R keys, and enter regedit
  • The Registry editor will open, navigate to the following key:
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\amd64_1d1dba042fa763d03f3cd84ea7bd6938_b03f5f7f11d50a3a[none_c6510489884c25fb
  • Right-click on the amd64_1d1dba042fa763d03f3cd84ea7bd6938_b03f5f7f11d50a3a[none_c6510489884c25fb key and select Rename. The new name should be:
    Code:
    amd64_1d1dba042fa763d03f3cd84ea7bd6938_b03f5f7f11d50a3a_none_c6510489884c25fb
  • Once done, press on Enter, close the Registry editor and attempt to run SFC again following the instructions I previously posted;
The issue here is that the key I mentionned above have the wrong name. It have a [ instead of a _
Code:
amd64_1d1dba042fa763d03f3cd84ea7bd6938_b03f5f7f11d50a3a[color=red][[/color]none_c6510489884c25fb - Wrong
amd64_1d1dba042fa763d03f3cd84ea7bd6938_b03f5f7f11d50a3a[color=green]_[/color]none_c6510489884c25fb - Good

I found the key and tried to rename it. It gave an error saying "The Registry Editor cannot rename amd64_1d1dba042fa763d03f3cd84ea7bd6938_b03f5f7f11d50a3a[none_c6510489884c25fb Error while running key."

Alright, follow the instructions below please.

Looks like you have Bitshifts in your Registry. This is often caused by a RAM stick that is going bad. I'll ask you to test all your RAM sticks individually with Memtest86+ before we continue with the fix. Because if you indeed have a bad RAM stick(s), the corruption will continue to appear no matter how many times we fix it. A guide on how to proceed can be found at the link below.

https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/3909-test-ram-memtest86.html

Let me know how it goes.

I ran MemTest86+ 5.01 for almost 4 hours and did not get any errors. I will let it run overnight for around 12 hours just to make sure.

Alright. If after 12 hours it doesn't find anything, we'll test the hard drive just in case to see if it's failing or not.

i ran Memtest for almost 12 hours and no errors. What's next? Thanks for your help.

We'll test the hard drive next.

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:
  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe;
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);
    info_failing.png

Edit: Something happened with the program. The green bar said Test Completed ETA 0 Sec and 90% complete. It stayed that way for a couple of hours. It let me paste what was below. I will rerun tonight.

Here is the output from GSmartControl:
