I've had this server for a while, imaged back in 2014. Had a fresh copy of Windows Server 2012 Standard installed on it and it was updating just fine until I had to shut the server down for over a year at the end of 2015... Now when I power it back on, windows update just does not want to work. I tried multiple fixes I found around the web like deleting my SoftwareDistribution folder and running the WSUS Offline tool (Which did not help...) Here are the last few lines of my WindowsUpdate.log file:

Symptoms include "Checking for updates..." on the regular Windows Update application and "Listing ids of missing updates" on the WSUS offline tool lasting indefinitely. My copy of Windows is completely genuine and I never had a problem with the windows update service before.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay. Are you still in need of assistance?

Re: Windows Server 2012 Standard WSUS Problems

Hello Brian,

I am, however, I am having a really hard time attaching my CBS.zip file to this forum... I tried using all three modern browsers?

Re: Windows Server 2012 Standard WSUS Problems

Please start with the following.

SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

It's been sitting on "Searching for updates on this computer..." for hours it seems. I'll let it run over night and update this post with any changes.

Here's what you need to do. Reboot your computer and immediately when the desktop comes up, install the update from the downloaded file.

Ok, I just rebooted and started up the Windows8-RT-KB3003729-x64.msu update. And now we wait.

-Pyro

If it doesn't install then please change your Windows Update setting to Never "check for updates", reboot the machine and then try again. Thanks.

I turned off Windows Update and rebooted then attempted to install the update once again and I got this:

"Update for Windows (KB3003729) is already installed on this computer."

"Update for Windows (KB3173426) is already installed on this computer."
