5/5, pretty excited of our progress so far! Haven't restarted the server yet.

OK, restart and then check for updates and let me know if it finds any. I'm off to a soccer game for an hour or so and will be back with next steps.

Still sitting at the "Checking for updates..." screen for about 2 hours now.

OK, let's reboot your machine and then check for updates again. Let's see if it finishes checking.

Also, do you have any other Server 2012 machines that are functioning fine?

Ok, rebooting now. No, this is the only 2012 standard we have. All the others are R2 and they aren't giving us any problems.

Thanks. If you could also provide a screen shot of your Windows Update screen on the server. It should look similar to the following.

Lastly, assuming that when you check for updates nothing shows up after 20 minutes please do the following.

Step#1 - Run Windows Repairs
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
1. Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...

3. Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
4. A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
5. Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.

6. Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open.
7. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
8. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
9. Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:

05 - Repair WMI
14 - Remove Temp Files
15 - Repair Proxy Settings
17 - Repair Windows Updates
21 - Repair MSI (Windows Installer)

10. Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.

11. Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

All set. I ran the tool with the following enabled:

05 - Repair WMI
14 - Remove Temp Files
15 - Repair Proxy Settings
17 - Repair Windows Updates
21 - Repair MSI (Windows Installer)

I did NOT however get prompted to restart, it just did it on it's own. It didn't spit out a log file either (Or I just can't find it?) I'm attempting to check for updates once again. I'll let you know how I turn out.

Please do the following on any other server that you have. Don't worry about what OS it is.

Step#1 - Export WU Info

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\
  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file WU (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  7. Please zip and attach this file.

There you go. That export came from a Server 2008 Standard (Vista) machine with no problems.
