I've been deselecting the KB890830 and installing the top one only. If i did it the other way around, the other one will install fine. I can do that if you would like.

Try only the bottom one. Let's see what happens. If it fails, attach CBS.log.

It downloaded quickly, then stayed at 'Preparing to install..' for a good while, then finished installing successfully. So now I just have the single December update listed.

I know this is a VM, but a VM can also have file system issues. We have replaced a lot of components already and I don't know how many there are to be replaced.
