I assume I will be deleting this registry key?

I won't do it until you confirm, don't worry. :D

Correct. All the packages in the ApplicabilityEvalucationCache key are the ones that show in the list to install. Let's try removing that key and see if it is no longer being offered. I assume by your response that you are comfortable deleting registry keys. If so, go ahead. If not, let me know.

Thanks.

Thank you. Updates come out on the 2nd Tuesday of every month so I'm not surprised another one snuck in there. I know you have done this many times previously however I'd like a fresh components hive and a couple fresh exports from your software hive. If you could do the following it will be appreciated. Thanks.

Step#1 - Retrieve Components Hive

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBack program now.

Step#2 - Export CBS Registry Key

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file CBS (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Once done please upload this file via Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace.

Step#3 - Export SideBySide

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide
  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file SxS (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Once done please upload this file via Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace.

Step#1 - Run Windows Repairs
1. Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...

7. When the program opens, click the Reboot to Safe Mode button at the bottom of the screen. Answer Yes to allow.
8. Once rebooted into Safe Mode, open the program again. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
9. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.

12. Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

All done. No change except for all of my hidden updates (like language packs) returning.

No luck yet.

OK, I'll provide next steps. Don't hide the language updates until we resolve your issue. Did you try installing KB2871997 again after doing the previous steps? If not, go ahead and just verify if it comes back as needing to be installed.

Thanks.

I did install KB2871997 again. It still installs successfully but comes back as soon as I check for updates again.

Too late about not hiding those updates: I did that immediately when they re-appeared.

Thanks for the info. Let's look at IE now. We'll come back to the others. I have what I need on those now.

Install IE 11 manually
1. Download and install IE 11 from here.
2. If it fails, please provide me with the following logs
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
C:\Windows\IE11_Main.log

Please try removing a couple updates and let me know the results of each.

Remove Update Manually
1. Click on the Start
Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:2670838
wusa /uninstall /KB:2834140

4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.
