Well, the fact everything else has installed is good!

Unfortunately I have exams the next 3 days so I probably won't be able to look at your problem until they're over. I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

strange situation. I get the same 8 important updates every time I check updates.

I insall them all.. says it's successful... then they show up to install again. over and over. really weird.

Hi again,

Can I have the WindowsUpdate.log file if it's still attempting to install updates repeatedly?

Thanks

Stephen

Sorry for the delay!

So - is it only IE that's causing the issue at the moment? I'm assuming you have IE10 installed? Is it still trying to install 8 updates repeatedly?

Yes, the biggest issue at the moment is that I need IE11 to successfully install, which it continues to fail to do.

I'm testing windows update to see if the other 8 keep coming back as we speak. Be on again shortly.

Ok, looks like we need to clear the whole SoftwareDistribtion folder.

Reboot and try Windows Update again. It may take some time to check for updates since we've cleared the cache. It may also clear your update history - that's an unfortunate side-effect.

IE10 was not installed. I've tried to install IE10. The IE10 installation fails with the same error as the IE11 install.

When I try to uninstall IE9, that also fails and reports that it was not uninstalled.

Grrr...

Run SFC again and send me the CBS folder. This is odd.

Done. The SFC did fail again this time for some reason....

I'm starting to think the hard drive could be crapping. I'm gonna run another chkdsk as well and check the smart status of the HD.

No chkdsk errors. Smart status checked as being 'Good', no warnings/errors. I'm a bit confused with all this at this point. LOL

Right then...

Process Monitor Log

  1. Please go Here and download Process Monitor. Save the file to your desktop.
  2. Double click on Process Monitor and press Yes on the UAC. A filter box will appear. Click Ok
  3. Make sure File -> Capture Events is ticked
  4. Run SFC /SCANNOW, once the scan has finished/failed please continue.
  5. Go back into Process Monitor. Click on File -> Save -> save the file to your desktop.
  6. Now go to your desktop and you should see a file called Logfile.pml. Please zip the file and upload it for me to analyse. As the file is going to be quite big please use Dropbox or One Drive
