Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. When I rebooted I found I cannot access Google through IE. It gives me "this page can't be displayed." I'm not having problems with any other site on IE. I can access Google on Firefox but Firefox will not let me upload the CBS logs (or anything else) to Google Drive. I don't see an attach button anywhere on this forum (if there is one, please point me to it).

Additionally, I tried to again install KB3161561 and again it failed.

Back to my Google/IE issue, do you have any ideas as to what could've caused this? I tried resetting my IE settings to default to no avail. I'm going to run malware scans now.

No I don't know for sure what could have caused this. I'm thinking it was a hotfix that started it all. Do you have your Windows 7 x86 with SP1 install media?

I ran Hijack This and it found a registry key created recently:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = Preserve

I deleted the key but no luck. Ran Super Anti Spyware, AdwCleaner, Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and they found nothing. Currently running ESET and will follow with Avira but I'm sure they won't find anything, either.

I tried running the IE Microsoft Fixit but it gave me an error code 80072F8F.

I do have my disk.

If you do indeed have your disk, the quickest way to resolution would be to perform a repair install. All of your programs and data will remain intact during this process. But for the rare chance that there is a problem, make sure your critical data is backed up. Pop your disk in and following the instructions in the link below.

I tried repair install last night and it wouldn't work. Received the error message: "this version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair." Makes no sense to me.

Previous to trying the repair install, I tried System Restore back to that morning which was the last time I didn't have the Google/IE issue. After hanging for hours, I manually shut down, then when I tried to reboot, it wouldn't reboot; said Windows couldn't start because some kind of hardware was unplugged (I don't recall the exact error message).

This morning I find that my computer is back up but with an error message: "the program can't start because COMCTL32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix the problem."

At this point all I know is my computer is unstable and I'm far worse off now than I was yesterday morning.

It's important not to go further in the repair process than is requested as damage like this can happen. I would not have recommended that a System Restore be attempted at this point. If you would like me to continue to assist you, please only do the requested actions. I want to provide you the best experience I can.

Are you able to take a picture of the CD/DVD that you are attempting to use and attach it to your next post?
Also, can you explain your setup of your computer. Do you have multiple hard drives? Is there any software or hardware RAID configured?

Thanks.

Re: trying System restore, it seemed logical at the time. I'll continue to follow your direction.

Re: taking a picture of the CD/DVD I'm trying to use, I'm sorry, I don't understand. Do you mean take a picture of my Windows 7 Ultimate disk?

Re: setup of my computer, it's a Dell Inspiron 531 with two built-in CD/DVD drives (one is broken) with 4 GB RAM. Are you familiar with Speccy? I could use that and send the exact specs to you.

I also tried to run Windows Backup but, of course, it wouldn't run; I received the error message "backup application could not start due to an internal error. The resource loader cache doesn't have loaded MUI entry (0x80073B01)." Right now I'm manually copying only my personal files (documents, music, pictures - not system files) to an external drive just to be safe.

Do you see any pattern to the error messages I noted? Do you think my situation is fixable at this point?

Yes please.

Yes I am. That would be great.

Good idea.

No pattern. I don't know if it's fixable but I'm willing to try.

There is something preventing me from logging into this forum using IE. When I click the log in button, the page moves. Any idea? And Firefox won't let me upload pics I believe due to some add-on.

There are missing key system files and there may also be permission issues. Would a sfc /scannow help? I feel like if I shut down I won't be able to restart.

I know you have other people you're trying to help but I need to know you can prioritize me as much as possible. If you can't, I understand, and I'll take my computer to my local vendor. I'm starting to freak out because I feel like a lot of damage has been done.

Thanks

You can zip up the picture and then attach it.

Yes a SFC /scannow would be a first step. As we are volunteers I can only guarantee responses within 24 hours. If this is critical it may be best to take it to a local vendor. If you wish to continue then do the following.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

After running God knows how many SFC /scannow, now I get "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service."

Re: the picture, as I've already said, I can't attach anything using Firefox. When I click browse nothing happens. I've even tried disabling all add-ons and enabling Java. I tried on my iPhone as well and it won't work for me.

I realize I rolled the dice by asking for help. I don't think there's anything you can do but if you feel like there is, I'm open. I do think I need to start looking for a new computer ASAP.

At this point your best bet may be to wipe your machine clean and re-install the operating system and all your programs from scratch. Or take it to someone locally. Not all machines can be saved unfortunately.

Thank you for reaching out to me in a PM as I would have never realized there was a problem or that you were disappointed in something I did. As mentioned in my PM to you, it looks like I misread/understood Post#61. I didn't realize that issues happened after the fix that were not there before. Completely my oversight. Let's reverse the fix and get you back to where you were.

OK, let's do the following. Stop and ask questions during this process if you have them.

Restore Hives
1. Open Registry Backup and Restore (regback) again. (This program should still be installed).
2. Ensure that the backup from June 26th 2016 is selected and click the Restore... button.
3. Click the Advanced Options link at the bottom of the screen.
4. Change the Restoration Mode to Copy Files. You will receive a warning about changing this setting. Answer Yes to continue.
5. Click the OK button on this screen.
6. Click the Start button. You will be prompted asking if you are sure. Answer Yes.
7. Once complete you will see it say Finished. Then you can click the Cancel button on the Registry Restore screen.
8. Close any remaining open windows and programs and reboot the machine.

Let's do it manually then.

Download New Hive
1. Please download SoftwareNew.zip and save it to the following path. C:\Users\Public\Desktop <----this path will be important later so please ensure you navigate here before saving.
2. Right-click on this file and select Extract all... Accept the defaults.
3. Once you are done you should have a folder on your desktop named SOFTWARENEW and inside that folder you should have a file named SOFTWARE and a file named COMPONENTS

Replace Software Hive
1. Reboot your computer and begin tapping F8 on the keyboard as it restarts.
2. this should bring you to the Advanced Boot Options screen and one of the options should be "Repair Your Computer". (If you don't have this option stop and let me know).
View attachment 12840

3. Hit enter on Repair Your Computer.
4. Select a keyboard layout and enter username/password if prompted.
5. Click on Command Prompt in the System Recovery Options window.
6. Type notepad in the command prompt window and hit enter.
7. Select the File menu and choose Open. Double click on Computer so you see all of your drive letters. You will see drive letter X: as well as others. Identify which one is your Local Disk.
8. Now you can cancel out of this window. You can also close notepad.
9. Now type the following into the command prompt window and hit enter.
ren d:\windows\system32\config\software software.bad <------please ensure you change the letter d to the drive letter you identified previously.
ren d:\windows\system32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.bad <------please ensure you change the letter d to the drive letter you identified previously.

10. Now type the following into the command prompt and hit enter.
copy d:\users\public\desktop\SOFTWARENEW\software d:\windows\system32\config\software <------please ensure you change the letter d to the drive letter you identified previously.
copy d:\users\public\desktop\SOFTWARENEW\components d:\windows\system32\config\components <------please ensure you change the letter d to the drive letter you identified previously.

11. If done correctly it should say 1 file(s) copied within the command prompt window after each copy command.
12. Type exit in the command-prompt window and hit enter.
13. Click the Restart button and restart your machine normally.
14. Log in and let me know how this went.
15. We will likely still need to run a SFC scan once this is complete but let me know when this finishes.

When I clicked on "repair your computer" I got "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem 1. Insert your install CD...(this is exactly what happened last night. When I put my CD in I got "this version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair." )

The rest of the error message I just got said "status 0xc000000f. The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible."

I suppose I could try rebooting and selecting "last known good configuration" but I doubt that would work.

Go ahead and try that and let me know.

Do you happen to have another computer available if we need to burn a file on to CD or USB?

I'll try it now. I have an ancient Compaq laptop with XP. I've got it booting up now to see how well it runs.
