Dee, go into Control Panel, then Network and Sharing. Click "Change Adapter Settings on the left.
Right click on your wireless network adapter and select Properties, then UNcheck the box for Internet Protocol Version 6.

If you do get disconnected, click the Start button and type CMD in the search box. Right click on the command prompt and select Run as Administrator.
at the command prompt, type: IPconfig /All and press enter
Then type: Ping google.com and press enter
After the ping completes, right click in the command prompt box and click Select All.
Then put your mouse in the title bar for the command prompt and right click, got to Edit, then Copy.
Start a new post here, right click and select paste to insert the text.

Hi Fred, I followed the first part of your instructions - ie. unchecked Internet Protocol Version 6, and rebooted. So far so good. My computer seemed a little hesitant at first, but seems ok now. I'll just keep using my computer throughout the day and if I disconnect at some point, I'll follow the second part of your instructions. Thanks.

About an hour later... my computer disconnected. I'll post the text here:

That's an old Intel 5100 wifi driver... even for Vista SP2 -

Code:
    Driver : Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN
    Vendor : Intel Corporation
    Provider : Intel
    Date : [COLOR=#FF0000]17/11/2008[/COLOR]
    Version : 12.2.0.11
    INF file : C:\Windows\INF\oem37.inf
    Type : Native Wi-Fi Driver
    Radio types supported : 802.11a 802.11b 802.11g

What is the exact model number - look on label on bottom of laptop.

Toshiba Satellite A300-?????

The model number is A300-02C (more specific: PSAGCC-02C019).

I had checked all of my drivers last week, and found out a couple/few were out-of-date; but I wasn't sure whether to leave everything alone or not.

update drivers.jpg

Can I download it from there (above in the diagram I posted)? Or is it best to download it right from your link from Toshiba? Thanks.

Added on: I'm thinking... I did have the connection problems right from the time I bought the computer, when I assume the driver would have been current (at that time - ha). I'll see what happens when I download a new driver, though (which I may need some help with depending on how complicated it is). : )

That is the same version driver you have now - 12.2.0.11

You could try the one available directly from Intel - 13.5.0

Create a system restore point first -
START | type rstrui

Download the driver only - ICS_Dv64.exe (1st selection) - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det... Vista 64*&DownloadType=Software Applications

See if that driver will install. Reboot after installation. Check that wifi works.

If any problems, run rstrui & restore system.

In the diagram, the available upgrade is 14.0.3.6. I couldn't find my model number in your link, and it's because it's from the U.S. I'm in Canada, so I went to Toshiba Canada, but oddly, I can't yet find the latest driver for my computer. They seem to be showing it for the same version (12) I have now. But, I'll keep looking.

OK, I went ahead and ran the driver utility at Intel again, and I downloaded the latest version they showed, 14.3.0.6. I restarted my computer and the connection was a little delayed coming on, but other than that, everything is fine and I'm staying connected for now. In Device Manager the ISATAP Adapter #2 still has the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark beside it, which I'll ignore. Hopefully the newest driver will resolve the connectivity issue, but we'll see. Thanks, D.

I was going to ask what I should do about the other possible updates I might need to do, but I think I'll ask in a separate thread if I can't figure them out. Thx.

Hi -

Let's see if SysInternals Autoruns can tell us anything more about the delayed start-up.

Download SysInternals Autoruns from Microsoft TechNet - save to Documents or Desktop -

http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe

RIGHT-click on autoruns.exe, select "Run as Administrator"

Allow it to scan registry (status = lower-left screen).

Save as an ARN file (default file ext); zip up & attach to next post.

I won't be on-line again until later this afternoon/evening. It is 11:06 am here now (GMT-5).

For info, here is the full info on AutoRuns - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902

What is the driver date on the Intel wifi driver v14.3.0.6? Check in Device Manager -
START | type devmgmt.msc | Expand Networking | click on "Driver" tab

Hmm, I got disconnected. I went ahead and ran the CMD, but the Adapter 6 was probably not unchecked so I'm not sure if this is helpful. I'll post the text. I'll try to figure out how to post it in code.

jc, I just saw your post after I posted mine (about disconnecting). Should I wait on your instructions, or do you want to me to go ahead with them?

Dee, follow up with JC's instructions and see if he finds anything useful. You can PM me the results of an IPconfig if you'd like, but the edited versions above are useless to me. It might take me a few days before I can get back to you. You could also try connecting your laptop directly to the router with a network cable and disconnect from the wireless network and see if there's any difference. Also, which antivirus or firewall programs do you have installed?

Thanks Fred. I sent you the texts in a pm. I have MSE antivirus and Windows Firewall. I've only had MSE for a month or two, and before then I had AVG, and before then Norton very briefly. I had the same connection problem with all 3 installed (separately, that is).

Note to Fred & John: I double-checked Dianne's logs at LandzDown and confirmed that when she switched to MSE, AVG was completely removed with no remnants. Earlier, she had run the Norton removal tool to eliminate the remnants from Symantec.

Thanks, Corrine, that's a big help!

Dee, try these suggestions one at a time and let us know if there's any change with disconnections:
  1. Plug your laptop into one of the 4 LAN ports of your router with a network cable and disconnect from your wireless network. Surf the net and see if there are any disconnects.
  2. Go into Device manager, right click on the ISATAP device and select disable. Uncheck the box for Internet Protocol version 6 again and leave it off. these can both safely be turned off for now.
  3. If you get disconnected, click the Start Button and type Network & Sharing into the Search box. Click on the Red X in your network map and let Windows troubleshoot the problem. Write down any messages Windows gives. You can try this using only your wired connection and then again using only your wireless connection.
  4. If you get disconnected on both wired and wireless, go to this link and run the Fix It from Microsoft, reboot, then try again.
  5. If JC finds you an updated driver, install that first.

Save as an ARN file (default file ext); zip up & attach to next post.

What is the driver date on the Intel wifi driver v14.3.0.6? Check in Device Manager -

Hi, I'll attach the zipped ARN file. Also, the date of the new Intel driver v.14.3.0.6 is 27/10/2011.

Fred, I'll be trying your suggestions later on this evening or tomorrow. Thx.

Hi -

- Remove SUPERAntiSpyware - http://www.superantispyware.com/index.html
- Remove Malwarebytes

Microsoft Security Essentials 4.0.1526 is installed. Windows Defender drivers are loading as well.

Prior post showed System Event Viewer log -
Code:

Not sure why "reg query" coulod not extract ~50k records from it.

Bring up an elevated Admin CMD screen -
START | type cmd | Right-click on cmd | "Run as Administrator" | Paste this command in:

Code:
copy %windir%\system32\winevt\logs\System.evtx "%userprofile%\documents"
