The USB device is a USB stick that is not plugged in when I try to install SP1. I use it to transfer files for you from the Win 7 notebook to mine.

All USB controllers are working properly (checked after clicking on each one).

I don't know how to get any more information than that.

It sure is. Maybe it looks like this because it's a virtual adapter. Software not hardware. Screenshot attached.

I think it's there from when I tried to install a VPN. (The install failed because "SP1 is not installed".)

Restart Windows in Safe Mode w/networking.

Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable

• Extract the tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip to c:\Windows\TEMP the zip will extract to a folder called Tweaking.com - Windows Repair
• Execute the file Repair_Windows.exe from the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair folder, accept the Security warning and the EULA
• Click the button Jump To Repairs
• Click the Open Repairs button to access the following screen:
  
  
• Click the box All Repairs to uncheck all the boxes
• Check only the following boxes:
  • 16 - Repair Windows Updates
  
  
• Check the box Restart/Shutdown System When Finished > Restart System
• Click the Start Repairs button
• When the system reboots, attempt the updates again.

I just want to be clear about this: do you mean "then try installing SP1 again"?

Failed. Same pattern as always. Apparently successful install; then configuring; then restarts; then configuring again; then fails at 99% and rolls back.

Two tries. 2nd try:
1. Backed up the registry.
2. Booted into Safe Mode with networking. Ran Repair_Windows.exe (repair # 16 only, with restart) as administrator.
3. Attempted to install SP1.

1st try I didn't run Repair_Windows as administrator.

Here are the logs for both 1st try and 2nd try (CBS folder without older CBS logs, Repair_Windows log).
