[SOLVED] Problem!!!

Good Morning Gary,

Thanks very much for your update. I ran the SFCFix program once again using the latest input and it ran successfully. I then rebooted the PC. This time the reboot took a few minutes and I initially saw a message of the form: "Windows is preparing to update your computer. Please do not turn off".

After the reboot completed, I ran the SFC /scannow command as previously and this time it reached 29% before failing with the same error:

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.19043.1526]
(c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 29% complete.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

Please find attached a zip of the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log file.

Interestingly, the Windows "Settings" window now opens successfully and does not close after a few moments, which was the initial problematic behaviour observed. I have attached a screenshot of the "Windows Update" page under Windows settings, which reports an error. The Dell SupportAssist program that provides updates to the PC also still seems to crash after opening.

Another positive note is that after enabling System Restore on my PC, the PC is creating System Restore points when any changes are made (please see attached screenshot).

Thanks very much for all your help and support.

Well, at least we're getting a little further each time. The corruptions that cause this kind of problem only reveals themselves a few at a time, so all we can do is keep chipping away until we stop getting any "new" ones.

Looking over your latest logs, back ASAP.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your latest update. I applied the fix (please find attached the output SFCFix.txt). I then ran the Windows Update uninstall command:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>wusa /uninstall /KB:5008295

but the response I received was that "The update KB5008295 is not installed on this computer".

I am going to reboot next and run the SFC /scannow command ...

I have removed the instructions in my previous post.

If you followed them please discard any search.txt file produced, and follow the instructions below.

  • Click Search and type Control Panel
  • Select the Control Panel App from the search results.
  • With the App open ...
    • In the upper right corner ensure that View by: is set to Category
    • Select the Programs group
    • Click the Turn Windows features on or off link.
    • This will bring up the Windows Features dialog.
    • Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps. You can minimize it if you wish but keep it open.
  • Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop
    • Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST
  • Right-click on the file FRST64.exe and choose Run as administrator
  • Copy and paste KB5008295 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
  • When the scan is complete, a message will display that SearchReg.txt is saved in the same folder FRST was started from.
  • Notepad will also open this file
  • Close Notepad and attach the file SearchReg.txt to your next reply.
  • You may close any remaining open windows now.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the new instructions. I followed the steps and ran the search of the Registry using the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool for KB5008295 (please see attached output file).

It seems this Windows update is not present in the registry.
