The screenshot looks normal. Please be patient. I need more time to investigate.

  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Sorry about the delay - I seem not to have received a notification of your last reply. Anyway here is the fixlog.txt

Thanks. But after 'Searching for updates on this computer' for a couple of minutes it reports 'The update is not applicable to your computer'.
The PC then shut down spontaneoiusly shortly after - coincidence?
I restarted it and went through the same procedure again with the same result.
Windows Update now reports, when checking for updates, error code 80080005, could not search for new updates.

Attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

Sorry - the file you need is too large. The original is VERY big (500 MB) and I had replied prematurely before it had finished uploading the zipped version (29 MB). But this zipped version is also too large to upload. Can I split or edit the original log file?

The log file cbs.log ends at "2020-10-14 23:47:04". Are you sure there are no newer entries ?

Yes, that is the date/time of the file according to my PC. I haven't looked at the contents of the file itself.

1. Click the Start button and type cmd in the search box.
2. Right-click on the cmd that comes up and select Run as administrator.
3. Once you are at the command prompt, copy/paste the following line and press enter.
pnputil -a c:\windows\WinSxS\amd64_wdmaudio.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.19091_none_be33a73631090804\wdmaudio.inf

4. You will likely receive a prompt that the publisher of the driver cannot be verified. Please install the driver anyway as this message is normal.

OK thanks, done that:
Processing inf : wdmaudio.inf
Driver package added successfully.
Published name : oem165.inf
Total attempted: 1
Number successfully imported: 1
C:\Windows\System32>

What next?

Restart the machine
Install only the oldest available update and report the result.

Restarted; 46 important updates ready. Just installed the oldest Win7 update, KB3054476 - successful.
Awaiting further instructions.

Try to install the security updates only. Start with the oldest one, select 3-5 updates at a time.

Thank-you. I have followed your instructions and reduced the updates from the original 60 or so to 10, by doing them a couple at a time, or even singly. But there remain 10 which I cannot update even by doing them individually. Four of the updates, such as SQL Server 2005, Report Viewer 2008 and Visual Studio 2010, seem to refer to programs no longer installed. Here are the outstanding ones:

So what to do next please. Remember that the original goal of all this was to be able to upgrade Win7 to Win10.

FRST Scan:
  1. Right-click FRST64.exe to the tool as administrator.
  2. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  3. Press the Scan button.
  4. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  5. Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.
