Windows Update Issue preventing me from Upgrade to Win 10

OK, can you go to Windows Updates and check for updates. Please install any critical or important updates. If asked to reboot go ahead and then check again. Continue to do so until there are not more critical or important updates to install.

One thing that has always been the case is when I go to the Windows Update , it gets hanged up. I have been now waiting for over an hour for the page to load. Is that normal for my case, given the issues I've had?

Because of the fix we did in Post#29, I would expect it to take a long time the first time you try. But are you saying that you didn't get to the point of checking for updates yet? Are you saying the Windows Update screen hasn't even come up yet?

Try the following and let me know what comes up.

1. Click the Start button and type Windows Update
2. You should see an option to click on that says Windows Update Settings.
3. Click on this and you should see something similar to the following. Let me know if you do or if it's blank.

Thanks for the info. Let's do two things please.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - Uninstall AV
Please attempt to uninstall AVG Internet Security 2015

Hmm... the PC wont reboot. Just a black screen for about 15 mins now. Should power down and reboot again?

There are several things we can do. Do you have your Windows 8.1 DVD by chance?

Ensure your computer is turned off. Then hit the power button and begin hitting the F8 button on your keyboard to see if a menu comes up. If it doesn't and attempts to boot just power it off again and let me know.

Thanks.
