[SOLVED] Windows Update Problem

That's odd about the COMPONENTS. I did get the Software hive without a problem. Please do the following so we can try to locate the COMPONENTS hive.

File Identification
1. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
2. Type COMPONENTS into the Search box of the FRST window.
3. Click the Search Files button.
4. When the search is done it will open a notepad window with the results. Can you copy/paste the contents of this window into your next post?

Here you go:

Thank you. Can you try uninstalling KB2949927?

Uninstall Update
1. Click your Start button.
2. Type the following in the search box and hit enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:2949927

Let me know if it uninstalls or if it tells you that the update is not installed.

No need to do this. Sorry.

I've never seen the COMPONENTS hive not appear in the backup location. The one we want is from

C:\Windows\System32\config\components

See if you are able to copy this one to the desktop and then zip/attach. Thanks.

Hi,

Trying to uninstall that update caused an error, 'Installer encountered an error: 0x8000ffff - Catastrophic failure', anyway !

There is no 'C:\Windows\System32\config\components' folder, per se. Is there supposed to be ? There's a large number of files with 'COMPONENTS' as part of the file name. I've put them in a folder & zipped that up.

Three of those files cannot be copied because they are 'in use by system'. They are, Components, 42.4MB; COMPONENT.log1, 256KB; COMPONENT.log2, 0kb.

This is the DropBox link for the remaining files with 'components' as part of the file name: https://www.dropbox.com/s/s1z3dftanz72agx/Comp.zip?dl=0

Thank !

Jeff

Correct. It's not a folder. What I'm after is the actual file named COMPONENTS. The path above is showing the location of this file.

If you get the message that the file is in-use when you try to copy it then do the following first.

1. Click the Start button and type cmd.exe
2. When the CMD program shows up, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
3. In the command-prompt window, type the following and hit enter.
REG UNLOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS

Now you should be able to copy the COMPONENTS file to your desktop, zip and send.

Hi,

That command, even with 'Run as administrator', results in 'Access denied'; "REG UNLOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS", does not run.

Wow. This may be part of the problem. Can you reboot your machine and then immediately try to copy that file to your desktop?

It was 'permissions' that was messing it up before, right ? If so, assuming that when Windows started the time before last I could have copied right then, how did permissions get changed by the time I needed to copy 'components' ?
I don't necessarily think it was permissions. I believe it was more that the COMPONENTS hive was loaded within the registry. Once you rebooted the COMPONENTS hive was unloaded so allowed you to copy it. It gets loaded on-demand. I'll review the info you sent. Thanks.

I've reviewed the information. It appears there's an issue with the Spanish Language pack. We need to look for a specific directory. Please do the following.

File Identification
1. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
2. Copy/Paste amd64_microsoft-windows-d2d.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_es-es_50649be18dfdc740 into the Search box of the FRST window.
3. Click the Search Files button.
4. When the search is done it will open a notepad window with the results. Please post the results.

Thanks. Please do the following.

FRST Fix - Inquiry

1. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
2. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
3. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.

Could you do a registry search using FRST using the following search string this time? Thanks.

Sorry for all the posts. You can skip Post#38 as I was able to find the info a different way. Go ahead and do Post#39 as it would be good to have that info if this doesn't work.

I think I found a bitshift. Your machine is reporting an error on the following as we previously established.
Code:
amd64_microsoft-windows-d2d.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_es-es_50649be18dfdc7[COLOR=#ff0000][B]4[/B][/COLOR]0

I think the 4 should be a 6 and that's where our issue is. So let's do the following to test that theory.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Items for your next post
1. SFCFix.txt
2. CBS.txt
