SFC /scannow results in "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" message. It came up before anything else, i.e. no percentage done for example.

But still SFC /scannow results in "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" message. As before, it came up before anything else, i.e. no percentage done for example.

Thank you !

Thanks for the info. Sometimes those logs do make me a little crazy.

I'd like to get a Process Monitor capture while you attempt SFC. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run sfc /scannow just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as sfc fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

Thank you.

That was actually very helpful. We need to reverse a previous change that we made and then do the exact same thing. Do a Process Monitor capture while you attempt to run SFC and then send me the capture as well as the CBS log.

Perfect. We now need to run the following one more time.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Hi, Brian,

I am using a different PC to post this since the System Update Readiness Tool is still "Searching for updates on this computer..." after running for 102 minutes.

I don't know if that's good or bad since Windows Update was saying I had never run WU on that PC before & SUR has a lot of updates to find.

So, my question is, should I hit the 'Cancel' button on SURT ? Or, let it ride ?

Thanks !

Jeff

And actually let me send you one more registry file to merge before trying again. So I would reboot, merge the registry file that I will send in a minute.

OK, here you go. After you reboot please do the following.

1. Save the attached Update.zip file to your desktop.
2. Right-click on the file and extract the Update.reg
3. Double-click on the update.reg file to merge into your registry.

Let me know if it says it was successfully merged.

Hi,

This is the result from trying to merge the Reg file:

"Cannot import C:\Users\Jeff\Desktop\Update.reg: Error accessing the registry"

Thanks for all your hard work,

Jeff

That's what I was worried about. I'd like you to try and access the registry manually. If you feel uncomfortable doing this or have any questions please ask.

1. Click your Start button and type RegEdit in the search box. Click on the REGEDIT program that shows up.
2. Answer Yes to the UAC prompt that comes up.
3. Scroll all the way to the top and ensure you click on all the arrows that may be expanded so that they collapse. What I'm looking for is a view like the following.
Reg.JPG

Let me know if you are able to get this far.

Hi,

I am able to get that 'home' view of the registry, no problem.

Actually, I use a script to open RegEdit so that it always opens onto that view no matter how it was left 'last time'.

So, I clicked on all the 'home' hives to make sure they would each expand to the next level.
