[SOLVED] Windows Update Problem

Good. Please navigate to the following path in the registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners

Once you are at the Winners key, right-click on it and select New...Key. Copy and paste the following in for the new Key name.

amd64_microsoft-windows-d2d.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_es-es_50649be18dfdc740

Let me know if that is successful.

Hi,

This is what I get when I try to add that key:

"The Registry Editor cannot rename New Key #1. Error while renaming key."

So, I scrolled up looking to see if that key already existed & it does ! This is the error that I get if I select it:

"amd64_microsoft-windows-d2d.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_es-es_50649be18dfdc740 cannot be opened.
An error is preventing this key from being opened.
Details: The system cannot find the file specified."

Ahhh so we found our issue. That's why I'm having such difficulty. I'm going to see if I can modify this through a hex editor on my side. I'll be back to you shortly. I'm going to be sending you a new COMPONENTS hive.

Scratch that. I can't do that. It's not the COMPONENTS hive, it's the SOFTWARE hive. I'll figure something out and be back with you.

By the way, while scrolling up & up to find that key from the bottom of the 'Winners' key tree, I stopped several times to see where I was & one of those times I got the same 'file not found' error. I didn't stop to look what sub-key it was. So, there are other missing files, misplaced files or wrong keys in there.

Note: It's critical that no one else use this file as it will likely render your machine unusable. Please start a topic of your own if you need assistance.

Thanks. Let's try the following. Please download the attached software.zip file to your desktop.

Then extract the file out and place it on your desktop. So please ensure when you are done that there is a file named SOFTWARE that is on your desktop. Not in a folder named Software but directly on your desktop. Let me know when this is done.

Thanks.

Hi,

Ok, I now have a file called 'Software' with no extension that is 65.5MB on my Desktop.

Jeff

Good. Now when you reboot your computer and begin tapping F8 on the keyboard to bring up the Advanced Boot screen do you have a Repair Your Computer option?

Yes, I have that option, 'Repair Your Computer', on F8 Advanced Boot screen.

Perfect. So here are the steps I need you to follow.

Replace Software Hive
1. Go ahead and select Repair Your Computer.
2. You will likely get a screen asking you to pick a keyboard layout. Go ahead and click Next.
3. Sign in with your username and password if prompted.
4. You will then get a System Recovery Options screen.
5. Click the Command Prompt link.
6. We need to find out what the drive letter is of your main drive. In the recovery environment sometimes it changes. Type notepad and hit enter. Notepad will open. Click the File menu and choose open. Open up Computer.
7. You will see the various driver letters such as Boot (X:), System Reserved (C:), Local Disk (D:) and possibly others. Look for the drive letter that represents your Local Disk. In my case it was D. Yours may be different. Then cancel out of this screen and close notepad.
8. Type the following replacing the C with whatever drive letter you identified as your local disk.
ren C:\Windows\System32\Config\Software Software.old

9. Now type the following replacing the C with whatever drive letter you identified as your local disk.
copy C:\users\jeff\desktop\software c:\windows\system32\config\Software

10. Type exit and hit enter.
11. Click the Restart button.

Let me know if you were able to do this successfully or if anything is unclear.

Hi,

Well, I tried to use the Repair Your Computer option.

First, when I went to reboot the PC from Windows I was delayed in shutting down when a message on the logoff screen said it was 'performing operations' & that it would shutdown when the 'operations' were finished. I have no idea what that was.

Then, when I got to the Advanced Boot options screen & chose Repair Your Computer, I got an error message about a device being unaccessable & I should either use a Windows repair CD, an install DVD or tell my administrator. Pressing <Enter> booted Windows normally.

Note: I saw a similar error message when this PC refused to boot at all back in the middle of April & I had to take the PC in to a local computer repair place so the could repair the boot process.

So, should I try this again with a Repair CD ? I have one.

By the way, this all didn't take that long. Writing this took longer. I'm also working in the yard, between messages/fixes.

Jeff

I can try again & get the exact error message from Repair Your Computer.

This is a business machine refurb. It's an HP Compaq 6005 Pro SSF from 2011. It has an AMD 765 chipset. I added a Samsung 850 SSD 250GB. That chipset doesn't support Trim & ACHI that the SSD wants although Samsung Magician software can make up for that. So, I added a PCIe 1x card with 2 SATA 3 ports that supports Trim & AHCI 1.30 to run the SSD & a Seagate SSHD hybrid hard drive.

You see, I'm not sure this Windows installation can be fixed so it will stay fixed if the storage system hardware has a flaw. I mean, we thought it was all fixed last week, right ? & I thought it got fixed last month, too.

I ran tests on the memory a few weeks ago & they all came back good.

So, should I get the exact error message for you ?

Ok, Brian, I copied the Software hive successfully using the Repair CD.

Shutting down to do that, I got the same message as before, namely, "Operations are in progress, please wait. The machine will be turned off automatically when the operation is complete." It doesn't make this message even when WU has you reboot, this is different. Do you know what's going on with this ?

Otherwise, our own operations went well.

Are you using Acronis?

https://kb.acronis.com/content/19016

Now that the software hive has been replaced can you see if you can manually go to it using regedit and select the key that you were unable to previously?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners

Then select the following key.

amd64_microsoft-windows-d2d.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_es-es_50649be18dfdc740

Yes, I have Acronis ! Cool.

By the way, I downloaded Acronis TrueImage 2015, installed it, made a recovery Acronis DVD (or CD ?) & rebooting to test that recovery disc is when all my problems started: the disc reported that there was no operating system on the PC. This was on 4/12. Rebooting without the Acronis recovery disc in the drive was the first time I saw the 'device unaccessable' message & I was unable to boot to Windows off the SSD which I had installed a week earlier. Is this a coincidence ?

Yes, I can select that key. The 'default' is '7.1'.

Thanks, Brian !

Jeff

Is this a coincidence ?
Doubt it. I bet you they are related but I'm not a hardware expert.

OK, now let's try this again please.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run sfc /scannow just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as sfc fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

Items for your next post
1. Procmon Log
2. CBS.log

Hi, again,

SFC did not fail ! It did find some corruption.

I don't have the Process Monitor log file. I think it would have been too big to post anyway.

Here is the CBS.log file.

Do you want other log files ?
