[SOLVED] Windows Update Problem

Believe it or not, you are fixed. The last remaining errors can be ignored. Microsoft is aware of them and will be fixing them but they don't impact the functionality of your machine or Windows Updates. Info on that is below.

This update contains the following two manifests that are occasionally updated by the Diagnostic Tracking Service:

telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json
utc.app.json

The two files are marked as static files in the update. When an advanced user runs the System File Checker Tool (sfc.exe), the files are unintentionally flagged as corrupted. There is no impact or corruption on a device that is running this update, and this issue will be fixed in a later service update.

Thanks, Brian !

So, I shouldn't even try to fix these errors. There was a fix posted using SFCFix. Then I read on the forum that it literally can't stay fixed, right ?

Thanks, again.

Maybe. How long will the Software hive file on my desktop be valid ?

See, what I fear is what happened to me in the early 90s. I had an IDE controller card go bad but its failure mode was to flip random bits, 1 in a 1000 or 10,000. So, my PC at the time acted 'funny' & I had trouble with Win 3.1. I was able to spot the problem when I saw extended characters in the INI files, smiley faces & such.

Now, this machine almost acts like that.

So, I may find I need to repeat the procedure with the registry hive.

I would not re-use anything that we have done. If you do that, it's against my recommendation. The Software hive keeps track of a lot of stuff and I wouldn't want to put you in a worse position.

Take care and I hope your machine stays healthy.

Hi, again, Brian,

I still don't have a Windows Update history. If I run SUR, will that find all the older updates & reconstruct my WU history ?

Thanks, again,

Jeff

Hmm. That would be the next step. Let's see what it finds.

System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Yes, I did.

The WU tray icon appeared as soon as the 'software' hive was replaced.

Besides the SUR 'update', from 5/21, I had two other updates in my WU history, so, only three entries total. That's why I came back to ask if SUR would restore the history entries.

It doesn't, so I have four entries, now.

Ahhh. Yeah I don't think you can get the history back but windows update will work going forward. Let me do some research and I'll be back shortly.

It seems to me that my problem occurs while booting up.

In the 90s, my IDE card problem was a sort of 'crawling crud' that happened a little at a time as long as the machine was on. You could see it happening while it was running.

This time, things are just different between boots which makes it seem like changes take place while the machine is off.

Maybe I should just leave this computer on all the time.

I went back through this thread all the way to the beginning and I noticed one of the things that you said you did.

I ran the Windows Fixit from the 'How do I reset Windows Update Components' page.

One of the things this does is re-create the SoftwareDistribution folder. When that was done, the history would have been gone. So you won't have the history but the updates are installed and it should work going forward. Here is a reference as well.
