[SOLVED] Can't upgrade to Windows 10 from Win 7 Ultimate (error code 8007005)

Hi sukh -

zcomputerwiz had something come up so asked if I could assist. A couple questions.

1. Do you have a USB drive that we could put the Windows 10 install files on?
2. Do you have another computer that you could use temporarily so we can make the install files?
3. What is the make/model of your computer?

Thank you.

Hi Brian,

Answers to your questions

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. HP Pavillion

Thank for your help. Really appreciate.

OK, great. On the other machine can you create a Windows 10 install on to the USB drive? When you use the Media Creation Tool you should have the option to create the media for another machine.

Do you know what model your HP Pavillion is?

Do I have to just put the Windows 10 install file on the USB media?

I bought it in Dec 2009. Don't remember the model no.

This link may help you identify the model.

Create Windows 10 Install Media on USB
1. Download the Media Creation tool to the desktop of your machine. Plug in your USB drive into the computer.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
2. Open the Media Creation Tool. You will be prompted to Upgrade or Create installation media for another PC. Choose the second option.
3. Click Next and choose your Language, Edition and Architecture. and click Next again. Note: You want Pro and 64-Bit.
4. Select USB flash drive and click Next.
5. It should identify your USB drive and you can choose Next to let it copy to the USB drive.

Thanks Brian I will perform these actions tomorrow after work and will update you.

Regarding model no. I found it in System Information.

Hi Brian,

I got the Windows 10 install file on the USB drive using Media Creation Tool.

Perfect. Please do the following.

1. Ensure that you unplug everything that is non-essential from the computer you want to upgrade. All USB devices, printers, etc.
2. Follow the instructions at the following link to do a Clean Boot of the machine you want to upgrade.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

3. Plug in the USB drive that has Windows 10 on it into your machine that you want to upgrade.
4. Run the setup from the USB drive and try the upgrade.

Do I need to back up my C drive before attempting to upgrade, just in case? or Will a restore point help?

You should always have a backup of your data. Although the chances are very slim that something could go wrong, why chance it.

Ok thanks, I will create a back up of C drive and then attempt in a short while, as I am using this PC for something important right now.

I tried to run the install file from the USB drive but, as was the case with media creation tool, the execution file didn't even run.

OK, thanks. If you purchased your computer prior to August 2013 (which you have) it's possible your machine won't properly work with Windows 10 as stated in this HP article. We can still try but please keep this in mind.

Let's do a quick scan so I can check some other things out.

Step#1 - FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please copy and paste log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

I've reviewed the logs and there are signs of having illegal Adobe software on your machine. If you want to continue you will need to remove the illegal adobe software.

Please let me know how you want to proceed. Thank you.

I am removing adobe software, and will let you know when completed.

Thank you. Let's continue. Please do the following.

7. When the program opens, click the Reboot to Safe Mode button at the bottom of the screen. Answer Yes to allow.
8. Once rebooted into Safe Mode, open the program again. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
9. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
10. Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:
