[SOLVED] random BSOD

The latest attached dump is of the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a) bugcheck.

Okay, here is what I am going to recommend for now. At this point, a clean install of Windows is likely a good idea (clean as in backing up what you want to keep and then wiping the drive and installing the OS fresh). The clean install and all fresh new drivers will help us say whether or not it's the hard drive for sure. Whether you want to go the route of installing Windows 7 or 8 clean is up to you.

I just want to make sure we aren't dealing with corruption and such between the upgrades and reversions before I have you send off your hard drive, you know?

Regards,

Patrick

Okay then I will perform a clean install in a while..hmm I just want to ask, is there a specific sequence in installing the drivers? Do I install the BIOS first or something and is it possible that my installer is corrupt even though I could install without problem?

What I usually do is have a USB drive ready before a clean install with the latest drivers from my motherboard manufacturer website. So, for example, I have Asus. I go to Asus' website, download all of the latest drivers onto a USB drive, and then just pop it in after the OS install is done and start installing my drivers. When asking you what method of updates you want to use when the install is nearly finished, I usually select 'ask me later' so I can install all of the latest drivers right away and enable it afterward without issue and set it to 'don't download or install for me, but remind me'.

Generally the driver update path I follow is: Chipset drivers > Video card drivers > Network drivers > SATA drivers (controller drivers, etc) > Sound drivers > Windows Update and install all of the IMPORTANT only updates (these are security fixes, etc). Optional contains drivers you already have the latest of that you just installed that you don't want to overwrite with OLDER versions.

Patrick

Okay..I'll just get my drivers ready. Another question(sorry :P), since I have switchable graphics and the AMD driver from HP is kind of outdated by the Family Driver from AMD website, I'd like to know can I install the Intel HD 4000 graphics driver first from HP then I'd install the AMD driver from AMD website? or should I just install one graphic driver namely from AMD.

For now, I am just going to recommend getting all of your drivers from your HP product page. Since you have switchable graphics, make sure you grab both the AMD and Intel HD drivers.

Patrick

Okay..so far I'm done with the clean installation of windows 8 pro 64bit. I installed all the drivers necessary and set windows update to important updates only. :) Just got to install Microsoft office and I'm done. I didn't install any antivirus software and just let windows defender handle the job. Is there any test I should run or should I just observe for now?

Hi,

Great work! That's about all there is to do for now. Monitor the system and let me know of its behavior.

Patrick

Hello, I'm actually at school and can't reply immediately. I have a problem, I haven't encountered any bsod yet but I don't have sound when playing with windows 8. Media Player can't open any audio format keeps saying it encountered a problem. I tried playing in VLC, it plays but there is also no sound. My sound driver is updated. I have system sound(like start up sound and error sounds) though and can play youtube without problem.

Hi,

Are the files you're trying to play in WMP and VLC strictly MP3 files, or does the extension vary?

Regards,

Patrick

That's very strange.

The only thing I can recommend trying for now is uninstalling your sound card drivers, restarting, reinstalling them, restarting, and seeing if there is a difference.

Regards,

Patrick

Strange indeed. I've searched the internet for any information, is it possible that I'm missing the codecs? I've found a media player codec at cnet and thinking maybe I could try it. :) cause whatever I play with WMP or the built in win8 app for playing music and videos they say that the files are not supported even though they are all mp3 or mp4 files. Hmmm..

I've finally fixed it. Thanks for the advice reinstalling the driver was the solution. :) so far, I'm back to observing for any bsod.

I thought so.... welcome to the wonderful world of drivers! :banghead:

Is this the longest the system has gone without crashing so far since the clean install? That doesn't mean much, but just curious regardless~

Keep me updated!

Patrick

Hello, good thing the sound driver was able to fix it. Hmm I had 2 bsods last night. :)

minidump(8).rar

after the the two crash I left my laptop open for 8 hours now..so far no bsod. I'm off to school now so I may not be able to reply immediately. Thanks!

Hi,

I'm actually in class right now but I just hopped on real quick to let you know that in the DMP's, it's showing a NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM (24) bugcheck again.

Moral of the story here is your hard drive needs to be replaced.

Regards,

Patrick
