[Win7SP1] Update failure

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
I still have "Never check for updates" mode on for the Control Panel WU, but the WU Standalone Installer is searching for updates. How do I stop it searching? Clicking on "cancel" doesn't stop it. I can ctrl-alt-delete task manager terminate it, but clicking on Download SURT*msu file again only starts up the search again.
Jeff

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Well, the way SURT works is that it is extracted onto a temporary folder, and run from there and then it is deleted. However, Microsoft later put this into the DISM command like in Windows 8/10. Instead, do this:

Running DISM (Windows 7)
1. Click on Start :startorb: and type cmd. When Command Prompt appears, right-click on it, and click Run as Administrator
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
Code:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Note: It may appear to be stuck at 20% but it is not stuck.
3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
Code:
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\CheckSUR.log %userprofile%\Desktop\CheckSUR.txt && notepad %UserProfile%\Desktop\CheckSUR.txt
4. Open CheckSUR.txt on your Desktop if it isn't open already and copy and paste everything inside it

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
I am not sure this procedure was successful. However, here is the checkSUR.txt contents. The command prompt had a curious error statement before I copy and pasted your second command. See below.
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi

I am extremely sorry for the delay. I had been busy with the linux machine, so I could not take a look at this.

Lets take the permissions of the folder and running DISM again:

SFCFix Fix
This fix is very specific for siltyclaycorvair's computer. Trying this fix on your own computer might damage your computer. If you are after assistance, create a new thread, and you will be assisted shortly.

Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and move the executable on your Desktop.
Download the attached View attachment SFCFixScript.txt and move the archive to your Desktop
Note: Make sure that the file is named SFCFixScript.txt, do not rename it.
Save any work you have open, and close every programs
Drag the SFCFixScript.txt file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it
1p8eDnI.gif

SFCFix will launch, let it complete
Once done, a file will appear on your Desktop, called SFCFix.txt
Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply

After you have run the fix, could you try running DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth in Command Prompt again

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hi

I had changed the script in Post #89 so that it would do the repairs that DISM was doing. Please run the script in Post 89 and then run DISM

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello Cking, I ran your suggested procedure in the order you presented. I apologize listing the results in the order that I did in my last post. I admit the order I presented is confusing. Jeff

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Whoops, I meant that you used the same script, rather than the one in #89. What I meant was that the script in post #89 was a different script, that copies the file that DISM/CheckSUR is keep on trying to copy. This is different from the script that takes permissions of the folder.

-CKing

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello Cking,
I don't understand your post #93, unless you are answering my question in my post #87. To be clear, I downloaded SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip from post #89, and then i copied and pasted the two codes from post #82 into the command prompt. I then attached and posted the generated DISM and CheckSUR files. If I did the wrong procedure, what is the correct procedure? I will then perform it.
Thank you,
Jeff

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hi

From what I can tell, it appears to be a permission issue for the files being replaced, where it can't read those files, and so SURT tries to replace it, keeping those same permissions. Let's fix that:

SFCFix Fix
This fix is very specific for siltyclaycorvair's computer. Trying this fix on your own computer might damage your computer. If you are after assistance, create a new thread, and you will be assisted shortly.
