[Win7SP1] Update failure

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
Yes, it self-changes back to automatically install. I shut down and restarted, and when I changed to Never and clicked ok, it showed again automatically... I changed to " check for updates but ask permission to download and install", clicked ok and now currently, it is searching for updates.
Thanks again,
Jeff

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hm... That is strange. I guess disconnecting from the internet and installing the updates from this list should do the same thing:

Hi

That is taking way too long. You can stop the installer. Instead, change the Windows Update settings to never check for updates temporarily. Then, manually download and install these updates in this order:

KB3172605
KB3185330
If any of these updates say they are not applicable, skip them. If they require a restart do so. Let me know if they give any error. If they are successful, then you can change the settings of Windows Update back to automatically install updates, and run SURT again

-CKing

So, from the list above, download the updates and disconnect from the internet before installing them. (I removed KB3177467 because that update was installed successfully). Let me know if it still is taking forever when searching for updates or if these updates give an error

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing, disconnected from internet, installing KB*605,standalone installer says "searching for updates..." and Control Panel Windows Update showing "searching for Updates" continuing for about half hour, clicked "cancel" on both, without affect. Wierd.

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
Here is what I did and results. KB*605 failed.
At 3 pm my time,Task Manager, terminate *wusa.*, stopped Standalone Installer Win Update search, but Control Panel Win Update still searching, all with internet disconnected. Shut computer down, started it up, logged in pw, disconnected from internet, Control Panel Windows Update still searching for update and still could not change setting from auto update by highlighting Never and clicking OK. Opened KB*605, cancelled search for updates, replied "Do you want to install KB*605? I clicked yes, installed complete, restarted computer and disconnected from internet. Process went to blue screen Config Win Updates, shut down by itself and restart by itself, went to "starting windows on blue screen, "preparing to config windows", config Win Updates, on 67% complete for a long time, came back to computer about 1.5 hours later to login screen, logged in pw, computer connected to internet, opened Control Panel Win Update showing message "Check for Updates" (looks like "change settings" took affect), I opened "View update history" KB*605 failed at 3:16 pm my time, 80070643 code.

I'll wait to try KB*330 update after your OK to do it.
Thanks.

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hi

The update may be installed. Let's verify with another update list:

Get List of Updates Installed
1. Click on Start :startorb: and type cmd. When Command Prompt appears, right-click on it, and click Run as Administrator
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
Code:
systeminfo | findstr /c:"KB" >%UserProfile%\Desktop\UpdatesList.txt
3. Once it has finished, attach the UpdatesList.txt on your Desktop

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
The text file is attached. Before I ran it, I attempted to install KB*330 from your list. The events and result is the same as I described for KB*605, the config updates got stuck at 62%, it reverted changes, and the login came up a few minutes ago.
Thank you, Jeff

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Strange! I believe using Windows Update to check for updates could work here. Please check for updates using Windows Update and install all the updates. (Also, are the KB3172605 and KB3185330 updates shown in the update list?)

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
I'll check for updates and install them using Windows Updates. This may take some 30 hours, like last time, then I'll post unless something relevant happens before. Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
Windows Updates continuing to search for updates, none has occurred in about 40 hours.
Is there something else I can do, or should I let WU continue to search?
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

This is going to take too long I guess. Lets have those two updates installed in Clean Boot to so if anything is interfering, it will likely not start. Boot into Clean Boot by following the instructions here and then follow post #63

Let me know if those two updates finally install or not. If they don't, attach the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log and C:\Windows\logs\CBS\CBS.log

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
KB*605 did not install but ran all the way through to nearly the end of "Installation" then failed last night. KB*330 continues to run "searching for updates" at this time since about 10 pm my time last night. All this was done disconnected to the internet. I did not run SURT. Now posting this with restored connection to internet with my laptop. While writing this post, I discovered the Update.log file is too big for this forum. The files requested will be uploaded in my next post.
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

After several weeks of trying various fixes to the Windows update process, I finally found the answer. See this site: Windows 7 Update Problems? Read this first. - Microsoft Community . The important update is KB3172605 in this site. Complete instructions are provided. I was pulling my hair out (what's left of it) until I found this solution. Not only does the Update process work now, but my computer is faster!

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello Andrew,
Thank you for your reply and information. However, what little I know about fixing computers, I believe your thoughtfully-given information won't help me for two reasons. First, a nice guy at the Microsoft Community helped me for about 10 days beginning in August with this problem, and when he was unable to solve it, he suggested Malwarebytes Forums, where I was helped by other nice guy for a month, and when the problem was triggered again, he suggested this forum, where I'm currently being helped by a nice guy. Second, the update you are suggesting I use, KB3172605, was suggested by my current helper about a week ago, has failed to install every time I attempted to install it, last attempt was this morning.
For continuity, I'll follow my current helper's advice. However, I do appreciate your help.

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Jeff, I assume you tried to install KB3020369 first, as stated in the page whose link I posted. I know how frustrating it can be, but I went through it for only a month. Other things I tried, but with no avail:

WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diacab
KB947821
sfc /scannow
clean boot
safe mode
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/949104
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

I don't know what else to tell you. Sorry.

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hi

Sorry for the delay. From what I can tell, many of those errors stem to files being locked, giving errors like [HRESULT = 0x80070020 - ERROR_SHARING_VIOLATION]. While we have already tried to use Clean Boot, I would like you to do it one more time, and attempt installation of those two updates again. If they fail, attach the CBS.log log and the WindowsUpdate.log log again

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

From what I can tell, something happened causing WU to roll back the the update:
Code:
2016-10-28 23:54:03, Error CBS Startup: Failed to process advanced operation queue, startupPhase: 0. A rollback transaction will be created. [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]2016-10-28 23:54:03, Info CBS Setting ExecuteState key to: CbsExecuteStateInitiateRollback | CbsExecuteStateFlagAdvancedInstallersFailed
2016-10-28 23:54:03, Info CBS Progress: UI message updated. Operation type: Update. Stage: 1 out of 1. Rollback.
2016-10-28 23:54:03, Info CSI 00000029 Rolling back transactions...

2016-10-28 23:54:03, Info CSI 0000002a Creating NT transaction (seq 2), objectname [6]"(null)"

I have an idea of a fix that should work, but before I do that, I need to confirm if an error appears again in SURT. So please run SURT again (if it is taking too long, then just let me know) and post the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
