[SOLVED] Windows Update Issue

Hi,I have run the tool as advised in SAFE mode. In doing so Windows Security Centre got turned off and I'm unable to turn it on again. Not sure if this is a bog concern now.

What is the Antivirus program that you are running? Restart the machine again to see if the Security Center is back.


Edit: Also run the Windows Update Diagnostic again to see if there are any change.

I have run the Windows Update Diagnostic tool again and it issued some error which it couldn't fix. Please find the screen shot as attached.

Regarding AV, I am running Symantec Endpoint Protection tool. I have restarted the machine but the Windows Security Center is still not working. I tried to start the Security Center service manually from services.msc. I received a message that the dependent services are not running. I discovered that the dependent services are Remote Call procedure (RPC) which is already running and Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service has not started. While trying to start the service I got the message:

Boot the system in Clean Boot mode search for new updates and install them in this mode.

I have fixed the WMI issue by running Windows Repair AIO tool for WMI repair.
As advised by you, I performed a Clean Boot of the system, and tried to install the update and it failed again with the same error code.

Open the folder C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and delete everything inside the Download folder but not the folder itself.

Restart the computer and force windows to search for updates. Try to install them.

I tried to install the update again by deleting the contents of the update folder and restarting. The install failed again with the same issue. Attaching the Windows update log.

Sorry just now I realize the last update giving you problems is a Preview update, please skip and hide all the updates that are previews, install only the final releases.

Check if windows is offering you other security updates to install and also check the list of installed updates to confirm if this one is installed:

Yes they are the same.

Previews can be problematic because they are updates not fully tested... What is the internet explorer version you have installed? and what language pack you tried to install?

I am using IE 11 on my machine. I can ignore and hide all the language pack updates and install them at a later point of time when I need them. However, today I received an important Windows Update: 2018-05 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x86-based Systems (KB4103718). This update is failing to install repeatedly. Below is the error code:

I would like to reset Windows Update, by doing this the History of installed Updates will be empty but that will not affect the Operating System in any way.

- open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
- type or Copy & Paste the following commands line by line:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
Ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
Ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
- Close the Command Prompt window, and Reboot your computer.
- after restart for Windows to search for updates, it will take a long time

I was unable to execute the command Ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak as the file was in use. I realized that I need to stop the Cryptograpghic Service in order to free the file. Hence I executed the additional command net stop cryptsvc before I could execute the last command that you have mentioned. After restarting the system, I tried to install the update again, and it once again failed with the same error.
